34 years ago today: Penlee Lifeboat Disaster.

Seth Lakeman performing 'Solomon Browne' at the amazing Minack Theatre.

The Solomon Browne left Penlee Lifeboat Station on December 19th 1981 in 90 knot winds, and 60 ft seas, to go to the assistance of the bulk carrier Union Star. The Union Star's engines had failed, flooded with sea water, on its maiden voyage.

The lifeboat was bounced on the deck of the bulk carrier, before being washed off again. In these conditions, the lifeboat still tried to render assistance, and went alongside again, and managed to take 4 people off the Union Star, before both vessels and all lives were lost. The Union Star was found upside down on the rocks by Tater du lighthouse. The Solomon Browne was broken up.

The redoubtable Richard Barry, whom we were lucky enough to have perform at a house concert.

A brief but noteable boat mention, which, being a multihull, must count double. ;) Mildly sweary.

Not about boats, or it must be that it's inter alia about drifters, but that's not necessarily boats, so just for the sheer beauty of the song . . :)

I expected that a Belgian of refined tastes would have mentioned Jacques Brel before. e.g.

It's not quite as good as Au Suivant but at least it has some connection with ships.

Of course the best Belgian marine-related song is about planing.
