would roofing nails be sharp enough? would they stand point up? Been awhile since I did a roof, but I don't remember them with these attributes

Ugh... oldest tale at sea. That was great for defending yourself in the late 1800's.

Maybe I could fasten a catapult to the deck? Boiling oil? :)

    Times, they are a changin.

The only defense on a boat without a safe room is to try to avoid problems, then "funnel and kill" if boarded. It's very effective. One guy can come my way at a time. The others can't see me. I kill them as they come through the one man entrance. Of course, this only works in the USA since guns are banned elsewhere.

It gets a little dicey to do this with a machete.

At night put out the welcome mats, already loaded with nails previously stuck up through the bottom.

Good idea Hoyt, the welcome matt! As of this moment, I plan to have several on IntrepiDos.
How much do you demand in royalties?

That works for the first person.

The others then riddle your hull with AK-47 fire and probably lob in a couple grenades for good measure. When you start burning and/or sinking, they then kill the lot of you.

Basically if you go down the path of armed resistance, you need a plan that gives you a good chance of killing the lot of them. Best way is to open fire using long guns while you're out of range of rounds like the 7.62x39 so over 400m. Now think of what's going to happen if you open fire on a boat that isn't full of pirates....

I have my own plan. There's a lot of the world with no pirates ATM. I'll just go there.

I sail the Malacca straits all the time , I live there. I have seen many boats that look like pirates and it has been scary at times only to find they were curious fishermen and yes most wear a balaclava too to protect the skin from the sun.
    Should I have shot them.

How do you know a boat nearby is a pirate. Its only a pirate when its pirated and boarded you.

As far as mace and pepper spray being illegal some places, cleaning powder isn't. Greatest nightmare of most people is going blind. I taught my kids if you have to defend yourself, attack the eyes. If an assailant knows you are determined to take out his eyes, he will keep his distance from you. A good cloud of Ajax or Comet or similar bleaching powder in the face, and your attacker is probably blinded for life. Don't do it in the US or he'll sue you. Better just to shoot him dead in states.

Your such a cutie pie, can I be your neighbor.

Can I suggest you pay more attention to the reasons why you would be in such a predicament. I have never ever been attacked. Is that because I don't live in America or because I am not you?-- what do you think?

Haha. I've worked all over the world and made friends. I live in 2 countries, Mexico and United States. Nobody bothers me. I don't walk around armed with guns, though I own guns. I'm always armed with my wits. I don't have a victim atitude or manner. Neither do I swagger or act threatening. I look alert, aware, saavy, and confident. Nobody messes with me. The attack by pirates I related earlier, I suspected then and now was by invitation from either a member of my crew by cell phone, or the tanker I dissappointed. I neither desire nor need to hurt people. But. a big BUT! I was trained in the military, it wasn't my duty to die for my country. It was my duty to make the OTHER SOB die for his! I apply the same philosophy in my personal life. Don't attack me and don't threaten me. A bluff threat is weak, and a real threat is a stupid advertisement of your intentions. Either one gets same response. Immediate pre-emptive lethal attack by me. Nobody messes with me.

Sounds like a life style philosophy blended from a mix of too many late night Arnold movies and the 'my cold dead fingers' rantings of Charlton Heston
