Nuclear fission powered ships appear to be very efficient/ fast but not very practical at smaller sizes, and they they might be costly when it's time to decommission them because of the radioactive waste. I got curious, and looking around on the internet, found they use the very heavy Radioactive isotopes of elements like uranium or maybe plutonium as a fission fuel source of heat for turbines. Fission doesn't appear to be a form of solar power, all suns use lightweight hydrogen to produce lightweight helium, which cannot be used for fission fuel. Because of the nuclear stability curve, the heaviest element that could be theoretically created in tiny amounts by sun fusion is iron, which can't be used as fuel for a fission reactor.

Sad that the reality is certainly: 12 knot for 1 hour and 5 knot for 7 hours.

Yes, where solar Electric vehicles are concerned, most of the time specifications are listed under absolutely perfect conditions, and the reality can be a much lower number! Still, it's nice to have the option for Maybe around 12 knots maximum, even if it be for only a few (for avoiding a collision), than not have it, and need it! Freezing temperatures, state of charge, unfavorable rain / snow /wind /current/ waves, constantly changing Sun angle when underway , even passing clouds, Etc, mean degradation of performance..

Here's a hype example of a solar paint for a vehicle, that means never having to plug in the vehicle in Los Angeles? Well because of traffic jams, the highest speed possible on Los Angeles freeways, might be 10 km per hour over many hours.. nothing is specified for open road speed and range conditions

Rowing is 3knots/24h by changing turns

12 knot is quite fast when considering than majority of cruising sailboat can't reach over 7-8 knot on motor.

If you are thinking about advertised speed you should rather forget about solar boats, and even a 2 ton sailboat in "calm weather" can be powered 2-3 knots with a trolling motor hooked to a solar panel and voltage regulator without batteries ( if you cool the motor to avoid overheating) , however that can be done too with CSP solar steam, even using a water lense instead fresnel
 
Omitting custom hull design dedicated to pv, you can always harvest energy 5 days and cruising 1-2 days with higher speeds. It depend on route and style . Consider battery and engines reserves.
For your boat weight and size 50hp x 2 motors seems to be necessary . As I mentioned before , check how boat is handling with those VW . Wind / current is welcome to find out power requirements. And you have some propellers with adjustable pitch you can switch and see the result. Highly recomended if you dont want a channel boat .
 
You cannot row 5 tons against a 3 kt wind.

Sorry i misunderstood the comment, it depends of the rowing crew you have but the usual rowing speed for ocean crossing boats is 3 knots while with a good aerodynamic shaped rowboat sure you can do decent speed upwind

I can row with a dinghy against wind by creating a lot of deep and strong rowing, when the oar gets out of the water the boat goes backwards fast, thats why pedal boats keep momentum against wind


Besides wetted area, weight, wave pounding, etc rowing against wind is penalised by air drag so a big sailboat will create a lot of backwards movement just with few wind and waves, that's why rowing sailboats have so little freeboard as xp lite

Otherwise ocean crossing rowing boats have high freeboard and cabin to selfright after capsizing by cabin roof's buoyancy

I put oar sockets on my 23ft San Juan, but the longest easily available, affordable priced oars I could find was 8 ft, which are too short for the tall freeboard. I did find some 11 footers online but havent pulled the trigger yet.
