    @Kengt:
    The design of your boat will be determined not only by the propulsion available but also by the racing rules. What are the characteristics of the race waters (depth, winds and waves)? What is the distance between buoys in the slalom race? What is the distance for the speed race?
    More data are definitely necessary.

    still go for a Torqeedo motor is might cost more but you get the best return for your watts.

    Tani the torquedo motors are great, but I don't think you could squeeze one in at this budget and still have the money to buy or build the boat.

    that torquido motor alone would eat his budget Stumble

    Go to the surplus center on line and look up DC electric motors They have a ton of small ones that should work for your application. Dirt cheap, Then go look up the threads on the weed eater engine conversion to figure out the lower end. Car batteries will hold up long enough to make it all work and there $35 around here for the reconditioned ones. After that the most expensive thing will be the wire. Might try the local surplus center for that one although they might have it on line as well. The canoe, craigs list. I don't see any reason you couldn't get her done within the budget specified.

    cheers

    and whaaaaaaat

    laugh a little

    the Torqeedo will cost you about 1699 us $, you have the solar panels it leaves you 1800 $ to buy four oil drums and some planks to put on top should work no?

    The off the shelf powerplant option sounds good.

    Perhaps TWO powerplants..... Deploy both powerplants off the start line for burst speed to get clear water, once ahead position your prop wash in front of the competition then retract one and endurance cruise.

    Mark rounding would also benefit from burst speed.

    You would need to know more about the regatta before proposing a design.

    If you really want to get silly design some low speed hydrofoils and lift the whole thing up out of the water, you'd be a sure winner if you could pull it off.

    some of these things work at extremely low power levels

    You would also need to know more about the competitors.

    In the US, particularly California , its entirely possible that Daddy Hedgebucks funds Juniors project with several prototypes built by BOEING and tested on LAKE X.

    Perhaps defense could be more valuable than offensive ?
