    Greetings,

Just aquired Sabb 30Hp 2jz and will use this thread to ask questions in regards to installing and running. The engine has never been started other than maybe at the factory. It needs certain components assembled to begin running on boat but seems just fuel tank and lines to run while still on the shipping crate.

It came with VPP propeller, guages, two shafts, stern tube, and some other miscellaneous parts.

Question #1: Why are there two solid stainless steel shafts about 42" long?
One is assembled with the boss and propeller blades along with 28" bronze stern tube connected to stuffing box. The other shaft is by itself and came with packaging.

Question #2: For those familiar with the Sabb drive system, can the second shaft be installed with U joint?

Hope to figure out how to post pictures soon. Think the shafts are 32-35 mm (1.25") and they are solid.

The Sabb CP propeller shaft should not be installed with a U-joint. The pitch control mechanism is working through axial displacement of the driving shaft itself; thrust is absorbed in the stern bearing.

    Thanks Baeckmo,

Reading the instruction manual before hand it mentioned the axial loads, but you confirmed my suspicion that trying to put in U joint should not be done.

Found out that original owner cut the shaft as well as stern tube and assembled them but the leftover sterntube was discarded.

    Greetings,

Engine was started, at first black smoke and oil where coming out, after warm up knocking stopped and exhaust was mostly clear.

    1. Have to get tachometer so not sure what the rpm's are, but is it true these engines can operate at low speeds without problems? Thinking from idle to about 1/4 throttle.

    2. Where are the glow plugs and oil cups? Drawings show oil cups right above air intake but no such thing is found on this engine. The oilcups are for adding oil to seal the cylinders when dry to create compression. Looked for wire going into block for glow plug without finding it. Is it possible certain 2J engines did not have these?

    Few questions again.

    1. The engine came with engine mounts, what are pro/con's of using them?
The tube is 28" long and would be hard mounted into keel, with 12" of shaft leftover.

    2. Sabb recommends directly mounting to wood base, what do you think of adding steel plate between wood and engine? This is a Buehler idea.

    3. There is a flexible coupler and it lines up with flange at output, the manual shows an adapter but that is not with the parts. The holes line up, can the two just be bolted together? The coupler look like the federal flexible coupling from General Propeller Co. with the one set bolt and have to see if key slot is there as well.

    Latestarter,

You are correct, no glowplugs or oilcups. This was surprising, when first started temperture was in low 20's so used ether as manual said it was OK but, if at all possible will not use it again. Mechanic friend mentioned that building in glow plugs was easy, not sure.
