I would like to get a job building boats but I don't know whether I should get training and then try to get into the industry or just apply for jobs and hope someone will be willing to train me. Any professional advice?

You are from New Bern where? If North Carolina why don't you try for a job at Hatteras? Before you invest in a lot of training, get you feet wet at an entry level position and see if you like it. Keep your eyes open an see what kind of position suits you, electrical, assembly, mold repair, lamination... Then get trained and let the company pay for it.
