Is there a funtional reason that a planing hull's bottom appears to taper slightly (viewed from the side) as it progresses toward the transom, instead of being straight?

to get the stern gradually out of the water halfgliders have this form, normal planing boats tend to step more abrubtly over the wave with a constant deadrise bottom.
