I have posted in the past year, and thought i would get latest photos out on my progress on an amphibious vehicle. powered by 350 chev, with a transfer case to shift tween differential and jet drive , a per rack and pinion steering will be sealed with rubber boots as well as rear live axles, with stuffing boxes and rubber boots. the bow /forefoot is designed to direct air /water out wheel wells front and rear, but guide water back to jet drive intake the suspended A/arms will have fairings and bumpers to prevent deadhead strikes and rise above them ,hopefully.it has a very slow/shallow 3 degree rise to stern/bottom at last 6 foot of bottom. (rocker shallow v bottom). hope to get on plane, 20 foot X 7.5 ft wide hull ,at 5500# lbs> i have a thread at member site and or call up amphibians to see other photos and sketches.

Hello: some recent photos of my amphibian project. shown is highlighted full size scrieve of some hull frame sections. i have discussions with jet drive sales to ask about hull/weight/power/performance ., of course it is a prototype. need to calculate areas of sections( simpsons rules?) to try to calculate draft. will add up hull weight ,outfitted.the body plan scrieve is on 4 ft plywood the rear wheel openings you see will be fender skirted, with small out lets at bottom aft re relieve some drag. the well wells will be raided in (Conical?)front and rear. hope to air bag suspension and retract wheels

Gonzo: in Canada, you can built a kit car and register/safety test, licence and market a prototype vehicle. The old school was called a hotrod. like a V8 in a VW. the testing inspectors were always amazed at what showed up.i will apply soon for kit car status. Federal Department of Transport, wold surely stop me to check out engineering of brakes, steering. safety equipment. besides i could always retreat to the sea. hope to complete it Rick

    One step beyond

I made my press, and jigs, iwas a marine lofts man , ships Plater. So called Brilliant ideas , cause me trouble> should get pro $$ advice ion calculations on draft ETC. all i know is it will float(attitude?) plane or semi plane, eat gas ETC? trying to keep weight down should have weighed all mech .parts. i am now installing a truck rack and pinion ( sealed at hull penetrations, bearings/ rubber boots ) trying to hijack wheel retracting ideas!! ride height is the issue (adjustable) Thanks Gonzo, I know you are OUT THERE!!

Instead of retracting the wheels, have you considered lowering a cover/fairing over them?

    wheel fairings

Gonzo: did you nickname yourself? OH NEVERMIND!! You are a storehouse of boat data /design. i have made full wheel fender skirts(removable) that guide water flow, front and rear. the wheel wells are radiuses over and around suspension , to aid lift reduce drag. yes i have thought about radiused retractable fairing pontoons with motorized gear ,like wedge shape in all sections(wing shape on edge) to reduce weight i will go for air bags for height and weight issues will add fairings to anything hanging down. next issue is keel cooling for exhaust, car radiators etc.for engine/trans. so design additions keep happening. thanks for tips and suggestions it all helps. Rick

    Hi Rick

    http://www.amphibiousvehicle.net/amphi/Wa_Yz.html

Sorry about the late reply resonding to your message asking me for more information about the Westphalen prototype which you may find more information you need by contacting the web site that these pictures come from other wise its lost in history.
Its the best site for history and ideas of amphibious vehicles, they even placed my folding trailer barges on some many years ago http://www.amphibiousvehicle.net/amphi/M_O.html

    Westphalen prototype 03 (1973)

Wilhelm Westphalen has build an high speed Amphib with a flat bottom.

The front and rear wheel are retractable in individual compartments.
The front wheel compartment can be close by horizontal sliding door panels.
The rear wheels are simply moved up to the rear above water level.

The propeller can also be lowered and raised.

Engine is mounted between the front wheels and drives only the front wheels and the propeller.

Vertical movement of the wheels and prop-shaft is by electric motors.

    Hi Rick
Your plate structures are to way heavy and extrusions are bulky with bad welds alongside the poor designs that will crack in time.
Your project looks like a nightmare that you have started and to late to stop.

Myark: thanks for amphibian photos. THe truth Hurts, then you DIE. my tack welds (temporary are Gross) i have a industrial welder/ spool gun , hard too get in small spaces.are you a weldor? i know enough to s/s buff joints, edges . i over weld (close spacing)intermittent stagger filet weld stitches. i vee joint all butts and seams, and vee out other side for 100% penetration, no inclusions or wagon tracks, . the plating is a little heavier than needed, the stiffeners are small, light. and may remove some (installed to help distortion). metallurgy, alloys first, pretty welds mean nothing, fusion, edge prep penetration , distortion control is everything, no restricted weld joints .My steel welding has never failed auto or marine. still learning technics metallurgy. just got some hi tensile aircraft aluminium alloy 7000 plate. not to ductile/bendable.

    Hi Rick
Yes my trade is a boilermaker coded welder “specialised welder” in flux core 6 G gasless wire and flux core all position, ASME 9 6G stainless steel, chrome molly and carbon steel in tig and stick including P5 6g “stove pipe” 4 G aluminium welding “A grade aluminium welder”
I try not to fall back on this trade and only do this to pick up some cash on construction work such as LNG gas projects, PowerStation and oil refinery and recently fly in fly out iron ore mine specialised welder in AU with boat building aluminium patrol boats etc for a change.
I cost lots of $ to create ideas but must provide for my sons. 5 years and 10 years old food on the table.
I am going back to China shortly to manufacture some ideas that I will place on www.kickstarter.com that eventually will finance the latest design amphibious Myark folding trailer barges.
I can see what you are doing with your project, making do with what you have while feeling your way through the project and why I made the comment.
The comment the moderator removed was not about you but some one that has insulted me many times as you may be aware of recent one.
Amphibious is my passion and believe I will find a solution to finally have a marketable practical and affordable amphibious vehicle that will not fade like all others have in the past 100 years.

    If it moves Weld it!!

I am not a good listener (selective hearing) . i have similar trade history. was an apprentice marine boiler maker/ fabricator. No weld certs. marine lofts man /draftsman, nc computer coding for nc plasma cutting ship parts(heavy steel& aluminium) RETIRED 5 years, got bored, i have some skill, little patience. BIG IDEAS? please send your email address to rickgray@telus.net, we can chat?i can send photos for future consult? thanks Rick
