I am working with a shafting plan out of the Netherlands and on the shaft tapers they have the call out "conus 1:10" or "conus 1:12". Is this the same as a taper, or is it applied as a taper were over 10mm there would be 1mm of taper, 2mm overall on the shaft, or does it mean more like a truncated cone where there will be only 1mm difference overall on the shaft?

I don't trust the scaling as I am working with a scan of the original drawing.

Don't have access to the actual shaft ends at this point.

Thank you for your assistance in advance.

    Regards,

I would try contact the designer if it is an "modern" design and an existing design office. Otherwise it should not be difficult to check the orriginal drawing.

By the way: Working from a scanned drawing and building a boat without paying the designer would NOT be the way to go. This should NOT be endorsed! I do not think this forum should help with this kind of illigal practices. I think a designer should get proprly paid for the desings he or she has spend a lot of time and efford making.

It is not illegal what I am doing.. We have been contracted by the owner of the vessel to do Naval Architecture. The original drawings are in dutch/German from DIANA.. Just thought with the number persons viewing maybe some one here could translate faster than getting a responce from DIANA.. I will write them monday from the office for clarification.

The original drawings are stored up some place... Easier to post a message than go rummaging..

    Cheers.

    SailDesign Old Phart! Stay upwind..

Go5Go, I think what you have there is correctly called a "pitch" in English. The 1:10 would taper 1mm in every 10mm, in section. In other words, that would apply to the surface, not the diameter.
Better to use the original designer's opinion, however....
