    Thinking of designing a boat a foot longer and faster than a flying scot. wondering if there is an equation to figure mast length using the dimensions of the hull.

    Depends on several factors.
    I suggest you read some good books on design before you start this road. If you are simply lengthening the same design by stretching longitudinally then the stability will not be much greater. Look up sail area ratios and calculate your mast height from all the factors of the design. If you want to post more specifics we can probably help.

    Cheers

    There used to be an old formula in Holland: regular sailingboat: 1,1 x loa;
    racing: 1,2-1,4

    This is just a rule over the thumb.
