sail size?

    I am building a Glen-L 15' day sailer.

We have sails from a Capri 16.5 that we would like to use with our Glen-L 15. The sails are not of the same dimensions as the Glen-L 15 plans and I am wondering how it will effect the performance of the Glen-L 15.

The main sail we have and want to use is approximately 1' 4" taller than the design calls for and about 1' shorter at along the foot. The jib is 5' taller and 2' wider at the foot.

Obviously we will need a slightly taller mast
Will it work to use these sails? How will it effect the performance of the boat?

Performance will probably be improved. But balance may suffer. With a bigger jib and shorter main, the center of area will be moved forward. This could give you lee helm, which would not be good for performance, to say the least.

You might look at moving he mast step back to keep the center of area in the same place. If the step can't be moved, you may have to rake the mast back to balance the boat.

Stability will also be affected, since the center of effort will be higher. You will probably have to reef earlier.

    Cheers,
