Ron White famous for his extreme modified F31 trimaran Cheekee Monkee is embarking on some new adventures. He has constructed a modified kevlar racing kayak/trimaran to compete in the Everglades challenge.

There was a decent amount of variable wind from the east. Not nearly as horrible as last year and there were useful breaks in the wind. Right around 07:40 it started raining.

Don't know for sure but the scutllebut(what you read on SA) is that Randy Smythe was first. Anybody know for sure? Anybody seen the very cool wood trimaran from last year?

I like the general design, but I think the 'leeboard' is a bit ridiculous. Look at that long, skinny thing. Then think oyster bars, reefs, and hidden sand bars. High aspect ratio is always a good thing for performance. But it isn't always practical. Even the 2 ft deep side dagger board on my Coal Car 12 design would give me pause in those conditions.

Worse than hitting a shoal head on, is drifting onto it or being washed onto it by a wave sideways. The deeper the board, the more likely that is to happen, and the more damage to the board and/or the boat is likely to occur.

The EC300 is no joke. It is a rough and tumble game.

 

I think the general idea of a leeboard is ok but agree a high aspect foil may not be best for the situation. I'd be curious to know how the boat sailed as the rear mounted floats would not seem to be the way to go for diagonal stability.
