So am planning a SOF roing boat; design not finalized but along the lines of a Gentry Ruth, Wherry, Whitehall style about 15-18 feet long.
I'd like it to be as stout and seaworthy as possible as I plan to use it on big lakes (Lake Superior near shore, Rainy Lake on the Canadian border, etc) as well as light weight so I can lift it. I know, conflicting requirements but I want to find the sweet spot between strong and light)

My question regards wood for the various parts.
Ribs, Stringers, Stem piece, Transom, Thwarts, Gunnels, Breasthook.
Opinions on best woods for each part?
    Thanks in advance!

Western red cedar for all of it, if you want light weight. Make sure you get the straightest wood you can find and cut it so you have no grain runout.

The pieces are typically small enough that grain runout leaves the frame easily damaged in an impact.

I would use red cedar, spruce and quality plywood.
