A couple of summers back I was in Lubeck, Maine and saw this boat. Is it a specific design? Does it represent a type? I assumed it was used for lobstering on a very small scale.

It is a typical outboard lobster boat.

    Thanks Gonzo,

I went back and looked up Bolger's Seguin in his book SMALL BOATS. I admired the design when I first saw the book in the 70's but being from the Midwest its purpose didn't register with me.

This boat bares a resemblence to Seguin but with less freeboard, a more plumb stem and a little squarer bilge at least at the transom.

Do you consider these to be examples of seaworthy, light, semi-displacement hulls?

Are you aware of any of these designed for, or built in, aluminum?

They are seaworhty. Years of offshore fishing in the North Atlantic attest to that. I think building in aluminum would be possible using dies. The hull has a lot of curves.

dturple - what size is your mould and where in NS are you? I often get requests for a boat hull of this type for use as a pleasureboat, but at less cost than a Rosborough or as a bare hull for owner-finishing.

    dturple,

Thanks for the offer but I'm toying with the idea of building one in aluminum.

OTOH I'm glad I could bring you and mmd together. :)

Doug, I have plans for a beefy, seaworthy, hard-chine aluminum workboat that was designed to replace a boat such as the one illustrated. The original client ran an aquaculture farm (Atlantic salmon) and his 'glass Cape Island workboat hull got too beat up hauling 2000-lb fishboxes of feed out to the pens in an open bay on the Atlantic coast. He wanted a boat that would handle the abuse and open waters. He got it - the boat is built like the proverbial brick outhouse, and motors along quite nicely at about 22 knots with a 75- hp outboard. Construction is mostly 3/16" plate, all developable panels. The original had the plates CNC-plasma cut by the metal supplier and was assembled in two weeks by a boatbuilder/welder and his assistant. Drop an e-mail to me if you are interested.

The boat is 18'long and 6'wide. I will sell bare hull for owner finishing.
