Traspac Race Record Team Tritium/Lending Club

The former ORMA60 Bonduelle modified by Artemis Team as a test platform for their AC72 catamaran has been purchased by John Sangmeister and renamed Tritium. It's been prepared to race in the Transpac Race and they are hoping to break the outright race record.

Update from the Gunboat Team Phaedo unfortunately after a fantastic race so far and setting a personal best record 24hour run they have dismasted.

Phaedo dismasted on day 3 of Transpac

Official report from boat:
At 1830 UTC (1130 PST) Phaedo dismasted in location 28 58.247N 130 09.576W.

Everyone onboard is fine, we have secured the boat, cutting away the mast and section of the boom, and are now heading towards the LA area under engine.

At the time of the dismasting we were sailing under A4 at around 16kts.

 

Too bad about Phaedo-real shame.....

 

Big shame. Phaedo is an awesome boat and 427nm on a luxury cruising/racing cat is an incredible accomplishment. One of the biggest problems (for impatient people like me) is that they must now wait an entire year to try again!

 

Tritium Racing

Editor's note: We spoke to John Sangmeister on the 72-foot trimaran Tritium Racing, which today shattered a telephone pole with its main daggerboard going 22 knots. While the board case was fine, the board was not. They were able to pull the board out of the case, clean up the splinters, and insert it back into the case...upside down. Not pretty but functional. Also, we wanted to give props to the Transpac media team for posting competitor reports, photos, and video on the Transpac Facebook page.

 

Makes you realize why crash blocks are so important in multihull daggerboard cases. It looks like the French multi's have some sort of shroud that sits around the daggerboard to absorb the loads anyone seen one in detail?

 

Lending Club has now suffered multiple collisions with debris there is a lot of logs in the water and now both ends of the daggerboard are damaged. They are still probably on track for the record if the wind stays up.

Interview with Gino Morelli on Team Tritium/Lending Club by Latitude 38 at the time of the interview they were about an hour off the record. They needed to average 18.3 knots at that point to take the record. It's quite possible but they need enough wind to make it happen.

A satellite phone interview with the team indicated that they thought the top of the mast failed first.

“We were running downwind with our large spinnaker up, and I was driving the boat and, yeah, heard it — heard an awful crack, and you know, the whole thing came down,” Phaedo owner Lloyd Thornburg said.

The nearly 80-foot carbon fiber mast landed on the starboard deck and pilothouse roof.

Without enough spar left to set a jury rig, Phaedo headed back to Los Angeles under power, making about 6 knots with about 250 miles of range in fuel. Because the boat was 500 miles into the race, fuel assistance was needed to complete the trip to shore.

 

Team Tritium/Lending Club are approaching the finish no sign of them on AIS as yet. They have overhauled the whole fleet and despite a destroyed daggerboard from multiple debris impacts are still making good progress on a mostly downwind course.

A great morning siting,

260 miles from the finish at 0800 the AIS alarm started ringing of an imminent impact. We spotted the mast Lending club bearing down on us doing 25 knots in 18 knots of breeze. They came up and passed leeward of us slowing down to wave and probably enjoy the aroma from our galley. After a minute or two they accelerated away then switched to a bigger headsail and just vanished while we were doing 10 plus knots. From Horizon to Horizon lasted about an hour.

As many of you suspect, the boat has sustained significant damage from contact with debris in the water over the last few days.

We have been pressing the boat to beat the record. However, we are now exercising prudence and good seamanship for the safety of our crew and to not risk further damage to the boat.

To finish first, one must first finish.

We anticipate finishing at approximately 10 p.m. Hawaii time.

Close but no cigar, the record escaped Team Tritium/Lending club this time too much damage to their daggerboard and rudder ended up taking it's toll on their speed.
