What determines the need for a wide (tapered end-to-end) plank keel in a lapstrake canoe such as Cullers Butternut? Versus a straight keelson/keel.
Is it for more strength, necessary for the garboards to fit due to hull shape, appearance, or some other reason?
Is there any reason why a straight keelson/keel could not be used in it's place, with the proper adjustments to the garboard planks?

    Thank you for your time.

A plank keel makes the construction much easier. For example, the garboard will need a lot less twist.

Gonzo has named a good reason. Compared to the wine glass section shape, there are several other reasons for using a plank keel. One is that the boat will sit upright when grounded, there is actually a small decrease in wetted surface, and a small decrease in draft.. In addition the interior is slightly easier to clean so that fish guts and other detritus is more easily located and removed. Pete Culler was a practical old guy.
