I have been designing a drift boat plug for the last 5 months and am getting close. I have been using fiberglass and bondo for the most part but it has gotten extremely expensive. Is there another product I can use such as plaster? Or should I press on as am nearly there.

You are better off to stay with the same materials. Otherwise there may be adhesion problems, different expansion with temperature, etc.
