This is an 8 foot model of a pre WW2? German submarine. Aparently captured by the Brits whilst on a visit to London who then gave/sold to the Free French who sold it on and was last heard of in the Carribean where she sank.

I think I have the story as I was told.? Cannot attest to the voracity though.

Additional info would be appreciated, send by PM to me.

Is it me, or does this look like a bloated, albeit happy seal?

Part of it does, but what has that got to do with things?

It looks a bit like Surcouf a 400 ft/121 m giant submarine launched by the French in 1929. Supposedly captured by the Brits after the French surrendered to the Germans. Reportedly turned over to the Free French, operated on several missions. There was some controversy about her, especially as she disappeared and was never heard from. One story says she was sunk by a freighter in the Caribbean near the Panama Canal while running at night without lights. Another says she was torpedoed by Allied forces when her crew began sinking American and British shipping.

One thing is for sure: she was a monster at the time. Main turret had 2 -8" guns with a range of 15 mi/24 km; she also had a hanger for a spotter plane.

The present 'Surcouf' is the first in a class of frigates, bit old now but she's one of these low radar signature jobs, all slabsidded and looks weird, but as more pop up with modern Navies they grow on you (still don't look like ships is all - more like the kinda thing a six year old builds out of cardboard boxes!)
