    That is insane! It is amazing those batteries are even affordable. How many people are employed just to build one EV car battery? Can the economy even afford to lay off those workers, if we shut the EV industry down?

    And, what happens to all the parts of the Earth's crust that doesn't go into the battery? Clearly cars don't weight 500,000 lbs.

    Wow, do you have a source on these numbers? By the way, my wind turbine only has two bearings, and they are lubricated for their predicted life of about 15 years. It has no transmission either.

    In an attempt to get the overall true picture, you have to remember all the energy which goes into making the batteries.
    Car body and systems should be about the same.
    How much diesel is used in the mining and shipping of lithium, etc?
    I certainly don't know.
    But I wish we had honest numbers.
    Agreeing with Will on reported statistics.

    Hoytedow,

    I'm pretty slow but 30K (cobalt) + 5k (nickel) + 30K (copper) = 60k of the earths crust, not 500k.

    What's that about statistics???
