They were doing studies in the ionosphere(I think) back in the 50's. My friend's dad was an artilleryman. They tried various materials for the projectiles to transport the instrumentation when rockets were undependable. Grapefruit was tough enough to take the stress of the cannon. I made a knife handle from it(our house was built on a former grapefruit grove) and it was tough indeed.
