AII, the photo is from 1908. The first western was filmed in 1903. Like XKCD says -

There does seem to be some evidence that open ranching used chuck wagons after the civil war, but it's hard to find any properly sourced info. But saying they never existed until Hollywood invented them wasn't right. Hollywood just put them in the wrong settings.

No pic, but a little about the wagons used on the trail drive.
I went to a local saw mill, and the owner was finishing cutting a Cottonwood tree for building replica chuck wagons.
Replicas apparently cost about $40,000 a few years ago. The saw mill operator said the builder was very specific about the thickness of the boards, in a quest to be authentic.
Apparently Charles Goodnight built chuck wagons from cottonwood, because it was the lightest available wood.
Cottonwoods still grow to 100' and 10' across adjacent to streams and ponds in Texas.

Sorry, but the chuck wagon was not invented by the film industry. You can find them from the 1800's in museums
