Thanks for the great series of pictures Hoyt . . :)

The above shown ± 1868 start picture, of your contemporary site series, showing a wooden predecessor, made me dig further into it, the Getty turned out to have the original of the 1885 picture of the newer mostly steel version, with the older wooden approaches still at each end.

It seems to have been a problem bridge (pics), first in wood and then the mid section replaced by steel, which still turned out to have many issues, while this all looked to be sponsored by some kind of snake oil . .

Or... more likely, it was an early commercial billboard along the railroad, nevertheless it could have been snake oil... o_O

And here I thought it was something like Macassar Oil, widely used for fissionable hair back then.

It got so bad with everyone using it that it ruined the seat backs on the passenger coaches. This lead to the invention of the Antimaccasar which was draped over the seat back to protect it.

Goat Canyon Trestle Bridge Hike: Worlds Largest Wooden Trestle ...

    Goat Canyon Trestle - Wikipedia
The trestle was built in response to the collapse of Tunnel 15.[18] Construction began in 1932.[6][19] Sections of the trestle were assembled at the bottom of the canyon, then lifted into position.[4] Redwood timber,[1] the same type used for railroad ties along the rest of the route,[20] was utilized because Carrizo Gorge's considerable temperature fluctuations could have led to metal fatigue in a steel bridge.[4] To resist Goat Canyon's high winds, it was built with a 14° curve.[6][21] Additionally, the bridge was built without nails.[6] Construction was completed by 1933, leading to a realignment of the railroad route.[4] For fire suppression a tank car was located near tunnel 16.[22]

    A. Rowland & Sons Macassar Oil advertisement.jpg

Note as said in the ad Macassar oil is or was a trademark of ‘‘A. Rowland & Sons’’, Thomas Rowlandson responded around 1814 with a cartoon...

That Macassar oil might be good for some of our soft headed politicos everywhere.

Make matters worse I'd bet the little crud muffins made off with everything on the inside that they didn't vandalize.
