Unsold imported cars due the economic meltdown in St Petersburg, Russia. Stored at an airfield.

Soviet soldiers of the Winter War against Finland in 1939/40, most of the Russians didn't have white snow clothing making them easy to spot and shoot. It's estimated they just under lost half of their 1 million man force in the campaign. One Russian general was said to say the land they gained by the end of the war was only sufficiently big to bury their dead.

Yes, the feeble performance of the USSR in the Winter War, that convinced Hitler and the High Command that "Barbarossa" was going to be a foregone conclusion.

Had Stalin purged a relative few more officers than he actually did before the Winter War, the right ones that is (or the wrong ones depending on your point of view about communism), it would have likely been a foregone conclusion.

But of course the Germans didn't learn the lesson from the winter war that they should have learned, did they? Sure, they didn't keep their armor and troops in neat, tidy lines all Varus-in-Germany-like, like the Soviets did in Finland ... yet they too didn't send their troops in with winter clothes. It shouldn't matter if they expected to win quickly ... they should have known that there would still be an occupation during winter had things gone the way they thought. Nor, for that matter, did they allow resources to winterize their equipment.

That said the real Bollocks Award must go to the Allies for the Sitzkrieg...

Emperor Napoleon made the same mistake. Winter is Russia's greatest ally.
