    Angelique: ref post #6066

If you like cultural books, I can recommend 'Afghanistan: The Land That Was'. This book is mesmorising, the photos were taken in the 1960's and 70's before 35 years of war and irreparable cultural change/damage. Buy it will confidence, it is a beauty.

As an aside, I was first shown the book by some French friends many years ago then eventually found a copy in Lahore,Pakistan in 2005. I gave it to my mother on her 70th birthday as she loved the photos even more than I. My mother passed away 2 weeks ago and I brought the book back home with me this week. Special book, special memories.

Thanks for tip about the book, Alex Wierzbicki scanned some pages and posted them here . . . .

Thanks Angelique. I love the book and the place, I lived in Uzbekistan for 2 years and Turkmenistan for a year. Afghanistan is a beautiful but tragic country, the book is a great portrait of a wild place.

Thekla was built as a much nicer looking ship, who ever straightened her sheer and built that condominium on deck must have been a ship hater . .

The boat was her ‘‘Nounours’’ which means ‘‘Teddy Bear’’ which is an appropriate name for a boat she she loved to sail and liked to cuddle I think.

Brigitte Bardot is someone for whom I have great respect. She also has excellent taste in nautical architecture.
