My wife's family were evacuated from Egypt to Johannesburg during WW2; that's only a few hours from Durban where the naval base was at that time. My Dad may have been on a RN goodwill visit quite a few years earlier, well before he quit the navy and married.

 

Btw, think you look like your Dad Terry, please post a pic of you of the same age as him here . .

My brother thinks he was in SA at some time. I think I look more like my Dad in your pic - I'm about 55 there with my grandson - than I did at the same age, he was probably around 25 although he looks older; we had rather different backgrounds and it shows. My Mom once told me Dad ran away from home as a result of bullying by his 5 or 6 bigger brothers and lied his way into the navy. They weren't as fussy then as they are now about proof of age.

My friend's shop burnt down last Wednesday. Thankfully it was not attached to the dwelling. He lost all but about $150 U.S. worth of his tools.
