    I seriously admire all that varnished woodwork. And I seriously wouldn't put that much of it on a boat, unless I could pay someone to maintain it.

    I forget his exact words, but Phil Bolger's comment on a design of his that was built of solid wood by traditional methods and finished mostly bright, was that although it was indisputably beautiful, maintaining it properly was going to require either disposable income or a temperament that he himself lacked.

    I had a boat like that early on....47' with the long bow sprit. And just about that amount of varnish. Trick is you have to keep up with it,...then its just a quick sanding and add a new layer.

    BUT if you let it go too long in between then you have to sand down thru several layers and add several layers back on.

    And I discovered a real good varnish that was known as Bristol Fashion at the time,... real durable

    Great web site. I like how it shows many of his images before the Soviet propaganda folks altered them with pre-photo-shop techniques.
