    Vasa

If memory serves me, The Vasa, as stated, sank on her maiden voyage. The tragedy was more pronounced because many families of sailors, builders and nobility were aboard. Loss of life was greater than if just sailors were aboard. Many personal artifacts were found as well as clothing, skeletons, weapons and provisions. Vasa sank deeply in the mud at the bottom of the harbor and was protected from worms and decay due to the mud excluding the worms and preventing the oxygen laden water from rotting organic material.

Launching a floating set for a Pirate movie I shall not name. This was copied from VASA, and we questioned the wisdom of the choice, but it didn't capsize and things mostly went well, mostly.

    Hi Batann!
    always a pleasure :)
I thought the Vasa was down your alley :D

"we questioned the wisdom of the choice,"
    funny :)

Still, I cant imagine the fun you had
playing around with that boat! Great pics.
How long did you get to work on it?
Was the Interior built as well?
    did you take her out?
(sheesk? like a kid asking a grown up!)
    a couple questions anyway...

    thanks Batann

Here are a few more pics.
We used this one for about a month or 6 weeks of shooting, but the set dressers, studio artists and super rigger girls spent weeks putting it together for us first after it was launched in Freeport, Bahamas.
Interior was built on the gun deck, below that on the main deck was steel and industrial.
Working on her was exhausting. All surfaces were covered with epoxy and sand, so if you bumped into a corner your skin came off. The sails were a foot thick with vinyl 'seaweed' and nearly impossible to handle. No rudder and a flat bottom meant we were always towed.
All the cannons fired, and there was a revolving 3 barrel one in the bow that was cool (it's a fantasy movie).
One afternoon Production sent us far downwind to get an important shot with the setting sun in the right place. Then it got dark. Then the wind came up strong. Then the towboat got the towline in its starboard wheel. Then the wind blew harder. Then as we blew uncontrollably sideways across the reef (at high tide) a breaker came in the main deck on the open, off-camera side to get acquainted, and took me, a couple of big generators and half a dozen porta-potties all crashing down to the lee side, where we sloshed about a bit when she rolled deep. Then the beach got closer and we were in 6 feet of water and the surf was breaking. Then 5 big RIBs came out to save us, average 250 hp each, all of then pushing against the lee side with their props almost on the beach. That one was close.

    very cool!
I can see on a working level it could be exhausting for sure.
I was hoping it was more of a replica for you to command.
I'm glad you survived the breaker on-slaught! It's never a good thing
when generators + etc are sliding across the deck!
At least standing beside it you can imagine what the original was like.
    thanks Bataan.:)

8 months of 14 hour days (sometimes nights), 6 days a week, and it was the most fun thing I think I ever did. Never to be repeated.
