I bought kites like that for my sons one year, George. Neither one ever flew them; instead they hung them in their bedrooms.

there used to be a shop named "Into the wind" up in Boulder that sold kites like that one. My bet is that thing is about $300 bucks, so loosing it in a tree is not really an option.

they had some upwards of $2000
crazy expensive and no way you would fly it within a mile of any obstacle

My Dad built his own kites when he was a kid in Denver.

Ones like those shown in the pictures go for about forty bucks or less, Boston. Which is still a lot for a kid's kite, but not so expensive it can't be risked. My kids just thought they looked cool hanging from their bedroom ceilings....

When I was about five years old, my dad built a box kite bigger than I was, out of brown wrapping paper. It had triangular wings on two corners, and a long tail. When he let me hold it, it lifted me off the ground. Fortunately he had kept one hand on the string, so he didn't lose the kite when I let go.

My dad taught me to built kites so small they would fit in your shirt pocket-twice. When I was in college I was flying one on campus. Somebody came up to me and saw the kite flying off in the "distance" which prompted him to ask how much "line" did I have out, so I reeled it in and showed it to him close up. The upright of the frame was made out of a toothpick and the skin was made from a piece of tissue paper that came in a box of new shoes and I only had about 30 feet of sewing thread unreeled.
