That polar bear looks pretty healthy to me.

the polar bears I think actually will be fine

its a classic example of a big fuzzy that everyone will goo a gaa over getting used as a poster child by the powers that be

its the seals walrus and other marine mammals that depend on the ice for shelter and protection that will really suffer

I suppose the female bears be effected by shallow snows in there birthing dens but my bet is they simply dig into the ground a bit and deal with it

bears are pretty transient and IMHO will survive the shifting climate ok

large marine mammals will be the most obviously effected but the real tradgedy is likely to be in the environment under the ice where so many species have learned to live off what grows there

several important species of Krill for instance feed off algae that grows on the underside of the ice and without that much ice there will be far less of these key species which are so important as a food source for many of the larger species

its a tragedy that is likely to cascade throughout the system and as in most trophic cascades that start from the bottom of the food chain the animals at the top like the polar bear will be last effected

Ive always hated the PR campaign that demands that one pick a species that is not even close to as much trouble as others
you just cant get a band waggon started by shouting

    save the Krill

but you can get mommies little darlings to cough up there allowance money by shouting

    save the poor bear

this is the exact reason I left the Zoo
they are spending 50 million dollars on 7 elephants

    what a crock
we are loosing species every day and what do they do with 50 bloody million dollars that could go towards saving critically endangered species that will be gone tomorrow with out immediate intervention
they house 7 elephants that wont be in real trouble for another 25 years or so

check out the hype and the spin

Well, you all can relax. Aparently the next ice age is expected around the 2040's, and aparently it's going to be more severe than the previous cycle.

I do not understand the language being used but nobody can mistake the grunt! That was a big hit. I looked to me like the ship just fell into a hole in the water, if I may wax poetic! At least no containers fell overboard.
