It isn't legal in Hobart, Oklahoma. Or at least it didn't used to be....one of my brothers back in the early 1980's got cut off on a right turn by an old man who suddenly jammed his car between my brother's truck and the curb. My brother Brian honked his horn and gave him the finger.

Unfortunately, the old geezer was the local postmaster. And a couple of nights later while Brian was eating dinner, a couple of Hobart's finest recognized his truck in the driveway from the description. They knocked on the door, cuffed him, and took him away for "reckless driving, creating a public disturbance, and making an obscene gesture in public."

The fat-bellied sheriff asked Brian where he was from, and he knew better than to say "California;" instead he told him he was from Arkansas. The sheriff told him, "well, yore in Hobart, America now, boy, and don't you forget it!"

He gave him two choices: pay a fine of several hundred dollars, or sit in jail for two weeks until the circuit judge came through. Brian was just about to start a new job on an oil rig and couldn't afford to lose it. So the next morning his wife hocked everything she could to spring him, so he could go to work that night.

Alliston Ontario used to have its own rather Iconic police force; back then odd things happened all the time. I got stopped once, I asked why and was told I had made a "suspicious turn" whatever that was. He just wanted to look in the back of my waggon, I told him he couldn't and he went away. I didn't tell him I belonged to the same club as his boss but I was tempted, and I certainly wasn't going to let him find waht I had back there. I could tell you guys but I'd have to find and kill you!

Another of the town's finest went to jail for creative evidence offenses.

Racial and gender laws forbid me to tell you about another one but she had such a stack of chips on her shoulder she had to duck through doors.

I was falsely accused once. The problem went away when the plaintiff's criminal buddy needed the services of the only competent trial lawyer we had back then. My lawyer regreted he had a conflict of interest problem with tat, so the buddy admitted it was a frame-up and that was that. Can't blame the cops for that although their investigative skills needed a lot of work, but they were heard discussing the case in the coffee shop and the phrase "he's gotta be guilty, he's the type, you can tell" was overheard. Things like that get back to you when you've lived in a town as long as I have. Clear case of accent profiling IMHO.

These days we give the job to the Provincial Police; they don't seem to get the weird types; pretty good bunch as far as I can tell.

post master is basically a cop and they all run in the same circles. I built a house for one up in Estes park a while ago

thing about cops is ( oh this will cause a ruckus ) my friend has a PHD in criminal psychology ( I just built a porch for her ), both her and another friend also with a PHD in the same **** said the exact same thing.

self appointed authority figures like cops are the worst form of psychosis

they both will launch into all these alcoholism and family abuse statistics and then go on to say how much more violent the cop is than the criminal

essentially saying that the cop seeks to go into trouble because he wants to and the criminal seeks to get away with trouble because usually he is feels he has to ( although I think crime is a choice myself )

both ( who dont even remotely know each other ) claim the cop is by far the worse of the two mentalities and the one far more likely to injure you

Im not surprised he was vindictive about being flipped off

the cops that stopped me saw a dark man hollering and gesturing at the president and I to was surprised I did not end up in the clink

sorry you got screwed by the establishment

The particular gesture goes back to the Battle of Agincourt, when the French promised to cut the bowstring fingers from the English archers. Before massacring the French the bowmen raised their "bowfingers" in a gesture of defiance. Then they axed them if they got the message.

I told him: I don't know, I just heard that he has a boat to built, but perhaps he will find the time.
He said at that time: a boat? that's great, tell him good luck, and I will pass a bill so he can have the financing. Do you thing and hudred million will do?
I say: Oh yes, after my cut of 99% it will be enough left for him.

I had a pawn shop in Altus Oklahoma south of Hobart. A very fine looking lady from Hobart brought her pistol in for a quick loan. When it was time for her to recover her pistol, because of the Brady bill, the sherrif where she lived had to do a background check and give his "OK" before I could return the pistol to her. When she came in she said he had been trying to date her but she had refused his advances. It rocked on for 3 weeks and he kept putting me off, "just didn't have time" I ended up telling him I would notify the ATF of the problem, he huffed and puffed, then said let her have it.

Poor bear looks like it's going down for the third time! With the Arctic ice melting the way it is there's not going to be too many excuses for being a polar bear one day soon!
