Those particular cacti aren't saguaros, Boston. Wrong side of the river. Saguaros are on the Arizona side. In spite of the fact that four websites I just googled claim Saguaros grow in California too, I've never personally seen one wild in the California desert--and I grew up here. I don't know why; the ones people plant in their yards do quite well.

I'm not sure what the cactus in the picture is called. But they seem to be in the barrel cactus family, and they're common around here. Most of them don't get that tall, though. They're usually shorter and rounder, like the two smaller ones.

Ive only ever seen em in the senoran so what do I know. I spent 6 glorious weeks there a while back and the only reading material I had was a guide book I bought at the ranger station were I had to apply for a back country permit. that and the girl but I ditched her shortly thereafter which will tell you about how interesting she was.

About 50 years ago my sister tried to jumpo over a barrel cactus. She didn't quite make it. We spent that afternoon pulling cactus spines from her buttocks while laughing at her.

ok I gotta one up ya there Hoyt

I was dating this girl and she had a yearning for some lovin on a mountain top covered in flowers and grass under a clear Colorado starry night

girl was a pain in the *** for the most part and all in all I ditched her in the long run but before I did

    well
its hard to see a cactus in the middle of the night
so naturally I had picked the spot and she sat right on it
I spent a few with a flash light trying to help her out some but in the end she landed in the emergency room

apparently the prickly pears we have around here have some really fine spines

Im not sure she ever forgave me for that one but I always look back on it with a smile

    cheers
    B

Ive been nailed by little comb jellies diving off the cape and I can attest to how much that hurts but I hear the box jellies are the worst
Ive never tangled with one of those
