Derr! You'd think that the penny would have dropped, given that I'd just finished glancing through your battens post!:D

    Stick with it I say!:p
On a sadder note, I have to say that reading through I was reminded of the posts that Mike D used to post......

People please excuse our dear and well liked compatriot 'EYRSTER".
We have just come off a very rough time over at the ***other***place and are a bit touchy.
We mean well, have NO AXES to grind, are or at least I am a nice gentle type of fellow.
Not 'into' pissing matches, oneupmanship, snide quips or rude jokes. I like boats even ones out of that other stuff.:D

I am a retired wooden shipwright, boatbuilder, loftsman having spent over 30+ years in the 'Avocation' of my choice.

Your patience and tolerance of us is appreciated.

    PAX

Mike D was a highly regarded member of the forum. He regularly used to post informative messages - more about design than construction (like this one.. http://boatdesign.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1220 )

Unfortunately he passed away a little while back. It's nice to have people about who are happy to pass on the knowledge that can only be accumulated with experience....

    Gulp...

A fine explanation to be sure and a person to be missed.

    Dave, sorry.
Of course, you'll never know which kind of "flaming" I thought you might be ;-P
My fingers tend to run away with themselves on the keyboard, resulting in the occasional booboo.

Hey, fellers! This topic (wood as a viable modern boatbuilding material) has been going on for two full days and about 30 consecutive posts, and mostly the posters have been fellows with a professional stake in the game, so how 'bout we "take it outside" and leave the comfy moanin' chairs for folks who'd like to engage in idle chatter. What are your thoughts on asking Admin to cut all the posts since Gonzo's 10/30/2003 11:06 PM post, "I build in..." out of this thread and re-post 'em in Materials under the title of, say, Wood as a Boatbuilding Material, maybe with a little pre-amble by Admin as to how this new thread began ("We moved these posts from another thread because...").

Gonzo? Oyster? Bob? What say ye?

    Move it?

    Whatever, I'm easey.

Hey maybe the way to solve the loss of skills and knowlege in wooden boatbuilding is for a book to be written..

"The lost wooden boat building skills of the 19th century" by trouty et al....an esoteric ramble thru the tangled shrubbery of many wooden boatbuilding mens' sawdust and termite ridden muddled minds! :D :p

But - who'd buy it?

Thats why the skills are lost!

Course it COULD be done collaboratively with contributions on different topics by different authors and sold in CD form over the ineternet! ;)

    Cheers!
