Following Sea's and Rudder Placement.

I have an old fishing buddy telling me that a rudder that is 10 feet from the stern on a 42 foot hull would be a problem in Following Sea's. I do not see the problem, infact my rudder is at the very end of my stern now and it comes out of the water during some following sea's and that is not a good feeling.
Any thoughts before I may some changes to my hull.
I will have my rudder at the stern after the second year of my project but the first fishing season may well see the ruder 10 feet from the stern, unless someone else can point to the problem.

 

Apparently you have attached your rudder provisionally on the stern. If it comes out of the water, it is certainly not in the right place. You may loose steerage, followed by control, so you may broach if you don't power up in time. Obviously you have left your old position intact. It depend a bit on the length of the boat, but I believe that being 10 ft from the stern, it might not be that critical, as long as it is placed aft of the prop.

 

The depth of the rudder also is of importance.

 

MY boat is 32ft long now with the rudder at the very end of the hull - that is why it comes out of the water in rough water. I hope to add 10 ft to the boat one year and the next move the engine to that new footage and then the rudder will be back at the very end of the hull. Not that that is what I want but I need to limit the length of the boat for docking and unloading space at the dock. Fish Hold location and fuel tanks keep me from moving the new engine more forward than this new 10 feet of lenght.

 

I am interested in a better rudder configuration also, if any one has ideals. I saw the thread on Schilling rudder and am emailing Becker Marine now. I will need a rudder with a brace coming from the bottom of the keel to the bottom of the rudder so a gill net would slide under and not get hung-up.
