    Don, thanks for your comments. DSS won't work well on every boat-in fact DSS installations on boats not designed specifically for the foil can be problematic. Contact Hugh if you want to explore this further. E-mail me and I'll give you his e-mail.

    I know you may be shocked but I did indeed read the "race report". The "race report" was from the News section of the Quantboats website. Is it a race report or a marketing letter? How about an unbiased report.

    YES it is a kind of newsletter for our friends and other interested people - but i swear i skippered the boat - i was there, some people saw me there they can witness:)....and NO i didn't write the resultlist myself.

    You all take that much too serious. Hey it is a game and i sailed all the boats you sail or have sailed and now i felt like doing something new. but one thing: More acting less talking (feels much better)

    Update: Allianz Suisse, speed 4.3 knots. She is in front of the vast majority of monohulls-and may actually be #1. Just behind the multis......

    Click on the class TCF1+2 for the class Allianz Suisse is in-she is leading her class and within the top three monos in the regatta! It must be quite light because the Pi28 multifoiler and Mirabaud LX monofoiler are behind the 28......

    UPDATE:2:00PM EDT(8PM Swiss time) big group of boats at the first mark-hard to say whats happening-speed 2 kts.

    At 4:53PM EDT (9:53pm Swiss time) Allianz Suisse is far out in front of her class and approximate 4th overall in monos. Go Michael! Speed 7knts..

    UPDATE: 9PM EDT(3AM Swiss time) Allianz Suisse still in the lead 2/3rds the way to the finish. Two boats are about 1.2 miles away from her moving at about 2 kts.
    The 28 is moving at .9 kts. This is a nailbiter for those guys....

    This was a very, very light air race* which played to one of the advantages of a DSS design: the boat has a lot more SA than would be true if just looking at her sailing weight. But since the foil develops so much RM in stronger wind the extra SA is a boost in very light air with the DSS foil retracted.
    So you have, in essence, two boats: one light weight, high SA, low wetted surface boat for light air, and another high powered, foil equipped boat for moderate and heavy air. Without the DSS foil the boat would not be able to carry all its SA in stronger wind.
    Clever design, cool technology.

    Doug,

    I think you hit on a big part of why DSS could be worth the effort. Many races are run in light air. If winning in these conditions means something to you, how can you compete with a boat that has a narrow hull and is built around a much higher SA to weight ratio.

    Thanks, Paul-but its not me-its one of the things Hugh stresses in any conversation about design for DSS-its why the foil is retractable. It's also been mentioned by Michael(Michi) owner of the Quant 28 "Allianz Suisse" who has seen this up close and personal. Makes a lot of sense...

    wind conditions on the bol d'or 2012

    Dear all
    just to make something clear about what was happening in this race.
    Yes a lot of the time conditions were very light. But with the nightfall maybe an hour after rounding the mark we had some westerly breeze with up to 30kts (we on the Q28 had around 18 to 20kts more or less constantly for about 2.5 hours). But during this time we had to go upwind - i mean really upwind and in a steep and shocking chop, sometimes the boat was covered with water from the bow to the stern. we were choosing a course in which we could run around 8.5 kts to let the foil do his work. i tell you it was funny and pleasant sailing. the boat went through the chop in a strait line totally neutral almost no rudder movments was needed. it was a very good experience. Boat and rig, totally unimpressed. Some spectators somewhere in the world following our track did a lot of misinterpretation because the didn't have 1:1 wind information. So "time to distance" alone does not deliver the full picture

    So, were you really going upwind, or were you choosing to reach a bit to make the foil work?

    What was your TWA and AWA during this Upwind course?

    Hi Paul
    We managed to get back to Geneva, which was lying by then directly to windward, if this is what you mean.
    We were about 4th or 5th boat in the class rounding halfway and first boat home - i have a strong believe that this is not possible in even the fastest reaching mode. I really hope you agree.
