Front mounted steering cilinders: restrict tilt ?

    Hi All,
    I'm seriously considering replacing my mono-cable steering on my Suzuki OB with hydraulics.
    Most popular are these front mounted cilinders (eg BayStar/SeaStar)
    Do these units restrict the tilt range of the OB ?
    I don't want my prop to remain in the water when boat is docked.

    Also, are there any drawbacks with these side mounted cilinders (when they fit in the splashwell) ??

    They do not restrict the range of tilt. However, you should measure the splash well to make sure there will not be any interference side to side.

    This link at page 1-3 shows the engine well dimensions to ensure full tilt operation for Baystar and page 3-10 for Seastar.

    Check the application information on pages 1-5 -Baystar and 3-6 - Seastar for your engine as it appears that some Suzuki's require a spacer kit and or other parts. You could email Seastar/Baystar/Dometic to discuss full tilt capability

    Any idea why the 'sliding' cilinder systems are so popular with all brands ? Less load on the hydraulic hoses/fittings with static cilinders...

    certainly ease of mounting the cylinder to the same position as a mechanical system would attach to it. With a remote ram/tiller arm, the push is not always coplanar with the engine pivot and more than likely
    the remote mount would require more transverse space in the motor well

    These 'sliding' cylinder models all have this 'bull horn' design allowing installation without having to remove the OB from the transom: this makes DIY/ retro fit installation much easier/less complex, so expanding the market for these products.
    So its commercial considerations, I guess, sacrificing a bit robustness.
