I can hear the cashier now. "Will that be plastic, paper or metal bucket."

Here in China you pay extra for plastic bags !! the fee is to cover recycling !! so most people reuse there shopping bags over and over again . My lady friend has always got shopping bags in her shoulder bag
There is a whole sworm of old people that rumage through bins all the time picking out plastic bottles and cans and cardboard and paper at night when most people are home in bed !, even the street cleaners have sacks that they collect plastic in . All the local building sites are picked over at the end of each day for recycelables and what ever can be put back in the system . Is nothing to see someone with a knife sitting in the shade and i pile of electrical wire off cuts getting skinned with plastic in one plie and copper wire in another . We dont have a waste bin at work because the crew come after we have gone and by the next morning theres only unusable foot prints left in the dust !!
I remember while working in Tahiti if you were cutting wood the off cut never hit the floor there was a hand out to catch it ! even the saw dust was collected and used and if you blinked the bit you wanted was gone as well .

Sounds like Ethiopia. You never see any garbage because someone always picks it up to use for something!

America will be like that in a few more years.

5% of worlds population and 80% consumers of pharmaceutics like pain killers.

Such a life style can not be sustained.

The new Obama plan is for the Death Board to give folks the "Black Pill" and save the minor cost of pain pills.
Surgery will be reserved for the Nomenklactura , or the folks that can get to a border , like the Canadians now do.

Unless voting with ones feet is also made illegal.

SheetWise All Beach -- No Water.

    Sustained? Why not?

We are the world leader in pharmacological research, design, testing, manufacture, and distribution. We have maintained the dubious policy of charging ourselves full retail, while wholesaling to the rest of the world. And you think it can not be sustained?

Wealth can be created Frosty -- it is not the by-product of some imaginary zero-sum game. We can sustain consuming 100% of what we produce, but the world would be a poorer place.

You mention Ethiopia, I was in Somalia and was surprised how many of these bags are floating around in the middle of the towns. People pick them up and add them to roof of shacks they build.

Hopefully your last part doesn't become true. Right now getting big money out of the US has to be cleared with IRS first. There are expatriation taxes. They also want to pass a law the if the IRS thinks you owe then $50,000 or more, they can put a hold on your passport. Presently over 1500 people a year renounce their US citizenship to avoid paying worldwide taxes.
