    GMR,

I think those guys on the other end of the phone were having you on.

If it was left hand you would remember because it is significant.

Not remembering, to me, would have indicated the norm, nothing memorable.

It's too bad they weren't more helpful.

Thanks everyone for the help! I am starting to assemble stuff for the drive line even though the ponoons are not finished yet. It never pays to throw out bike parts, you just never know!! I glassed the hull of one on Sunday and still need one more coat of epoxy on the cloth and then two or three on the deck, will do the other this week some time I hope.
Ian, thanks for the outrigger dimensions, I hope to use a similar construction method for my stabilized mono-hull version (one of the cat hulls) but they would have been a little wider, so I will take another look at my plan. I also have to decide if I want one or two connection points to the main hull......

    Thanks

    Glen

    New Boat

    Glen
Have almost completed building of my new boat, its Ricks V15 design. The boat is 5m long and has an inline shaft using a 1:3.3 Involute gearbox. The outriggers and support are one piece, all fits into place using two wing nuts. The seat support is also the support for the outriggers, makes assembly very quick and easy. The supports are a 25x25 aluminiun tube covered with curved ply fibreglassed on top and bottom. The tube slides into a slot in the seat support and the upright is fixed with a bolt protruding from the seat support. Trying it out for first time this weekend so see how it goes. I'm using the same shaft and prop that I have on my current boat, see how much faster this boat goes.

    Very nice I57.

    More pictures please.

If you take any video of your outing would you consider using a tripod?

Unless of course you've already got a gyro stabilizer...

That looks fantastic! Should be a very interesting comparison.....You have started and finished (well for now anyway) an entire boat in less time than it is taking me to decide what colour to paint! Congrats, good luck this weekend...

Put an Avatar on, it is I as in the letter i. Put the final coat on today so will assemble the shaft and rudder tomorrow and get a few as completed pics and a weight. I've estimated about 28-29kg all up including gearbox, shaft and prop. I've got a small waterproof digital camera which does video as well but no sound. How good the shots are depends on how still I can hold the camera when pedalling the boat.

I missread upchurchmr's post and thought... Never mind.

If I might make another suggestion/request:

Mount the camera on board. My point is amateur video (no offence simply the truth) is so bouncey it's boarder line useless.

    Point made, carry on.

    Nice avatar. What is it?

V15-I is all set to go, fitted the shaft and prop today and the rudder. Put everything into place to make sure it all works. Putting it on the water this weekend, see what speed I can crank it up to. All up weight is 30kg, a bit heavier than I thought. Assembly is a lot quicker than the old boat, seat is part of the hull and each outrigger and support are held in place with one wing nut. Gearbox is transported seperately to make boat easier to lift onto roof rack. Gearbox is fitted to aluminium bracket which slides into place and is fixed with 4 wing nuts.

What are you using for rudders? Rick's dipping rudders?

    V15-I First outing

V15-I had its first time on the water today, a very windy day. Despite the wind boat performed well, the wave piercing bow sliced the waves into the wind and downwind was really moving. The wind made it a bit hard to turn as the strut rudder is a bit small for those conditions. The connecting tube between the gearbox and shaft broke after about one hour. This is the same drive setup I used on the old boat so should have put in a new connecting piece. As far as the boat went performed well and handled the conditions with ease. Rick did a couple of videos which he put on You Tube here are the links.
