I'm sure some "green" group would condemn cannibalism as being not environmentally sustainable.

Any sensible group would say the present high human population is not environmentally sustainable.

That might have been true at the time he said it, or probably even now if everyone lived and ate as simply as he did. But the reality is that no one lives like that now, at least on purpose. They might be forced to, but no one wants to if they have a choice.

The blue line in this world population graph handily shows from when Ghandi died to now, and it doesn't seem promising. It's why people in the OP are saying "Demand for wild harvest fish meal and fish oil now outstrips supply." and "the prawn farms that have all but destroyed Thailand’s mangrove forests."

Anyone else see the conundrums here ?

Particularly the cheap dig at 'greens' who recognize that if nature ( like mangroves ) disappears , humans do too.

Then Mahatmas little proverb that ignores the huge number of people living on meagre rations, do as about as much damage to the life supporting systems of the earth as the relatively small number of 'greedy' people.

I agree with you entirely, the population is already way to high, especially with the prospect of billions more people clamouring to become like consumerist "developed" countries. My little joke was probably aiming at the tendency of some green groups to push the cause regardless of its impact on people's lives and livelihoods. "Let's shut down export coal, a ship might collide with the reef", that sort of stuff. People have had a gut-full of it.

Or convert it to diamonds. There is enough carbon in the human body when cremated to produce diamond. I have read somewhere that some companies are offering this. Not exactly premium grade diamonds and the cost of making it is more than the cost of a true diamond but at least you can "wear" the remains of your loved ones.
