Can a parallel offset transmission, like a zf-220, be mounted horizontally
or only vertically? If not what would cause the problem.

ZF website has a lot of info on these, but it is not all easy to find.

What I could make out is that ZF 220 Marine transmission can be mounted at 15 degree angle (from vertical, shaft horisontal) to all directions, so horisontal of not possible. The reason in most things that have oil in them is that the oil flow only works in a certain position.
