Bos, I won't go point-by-point but this is important - Pirate sympathizers can STOP using "hit-and-run" in their platform.

and the Japanese did appear to turn to stb. It could have been to avoid a collision (most likely), or to ram in defence. Either way, they were within their rights and conducted themselves well in every regard. The F'ers in the black eyesore flying the Jolly Roger were trying to get hit. I would certainly ram, or otherwise disable, a vessel that was attacking me. The Japanese are in a sensitive position here and have obviously well rehearsed appropriate responses but I would have aerated the black boat in this instance. None of you express any idea of the danger caused by tying up a vessel's running gear if they were to succeed - this is not play. Enuf is enuf of these *******s.

1 less whaler, more happy whales.
1 less whale, LOTS more happy krill.
    What's the difference?

Whale hunting for research ? Right, the next twenty selecants goes to my fridge - also for research.

As for the small boat challenging the big boat - publicity stunt or stupidity ?

Under whose jurisdiction, and under what laws, does someone have a right to attack a vessel on the high seas to stop what they consider illegal activity?

Maritime piracy, according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of 1982, consists of any criminal acts of violence, detention, or depredation committed for private ends by the crew or the passengers of a private ship or aircraft that is directed on the high seas against another ship, aircraft, or against persons or property on board a ship or aircraft.

Attempting to disable a ship and put it and its crew at the mercy of the elements far from a safe harbor; launching slippery substances onto its deck to endanger the crew's footing; launching foul-smelling substances onto the deck to sicken the crew; attempting to blind crew members with a laser beam;......all of these are criminal acts of violence.

Since they aren't acting as part of a recognized military unit in time of war, or as authorized representatives of any government or law enforcement agency, they're committing said criminal acts for private ends.

Therefore, they're pirates according to international law. They should be convicted and taken out of circulation, before they get someone killed with their foolish attacks.

The whalers, on the other hand, are operating in accordance with the laws of Japan. If the SS doesn't like that, they should take it up with Japanese lawmakers. Attacking Japanese ships at sea instead simply hardens the attitudes back in Japan--and makes it less likely that they'll stop the whaling.

illegal actions are not open to consideration in the sense you are using the term, but only to interpretation according to the structure of the statutes buy a an obligated citizenry if in the absence of legal authority. It is what keeps SS out of legal trouble in the international community

those acts are not committed for private ends
as they have no vested financial interest in the entering a conflict

they are an effort to prevent an illegal activity from continuing

they are acting in accordance with established international law when they interfere with an illegal activity as long as they do not injure anyone

basically these guys have done there homework and know exactly how to go about deterring illegal fishing legally
why do you think they can get away with a TV show

    Citation Needed!

What "established international law" is this that they are using to assault and harass people? If these Japanese whalers really Are committing crimes, why do the Sea Shepherds not put together armed boarding parties, take control of the ships, and hand the crews over to police when they reach harbor where they will be detained and put on trial?

Could it be because what the Japanese are doing will not hold up in court, and therefore is only questionable in legal standing while not being clearly illegal?

So the eco terrorists are at it again, but one thing is certain you can bet your last dollar ,or piece of gold , that for all their chest thumping the australian government will do absolutely nothing ( nor should they) the japanese are our second biggest trading partner, until recently our biggest.we have already upset the japanese over a little mining venture that went wrong so things are a bit icky at the moment. anyway i am sick to death of eco terroists ,this country is full of them, and ther'e well represented on my little patch, all we hear is ''you are using too much electricity, you are using too much water ,you should be riding bicycles, dont use your car ,and for gods sake dont even mention 2 stroke lawn mowers, leaf blowers etc etc, save the planet and it goes on and on ,bah a pox on them i say....hartley

What keeps the SS (quite appropriate name, by the way) out of legal trouble in this case is not the legality of their actions, but the fact that so far it's been more effort than it's worth for any government to put them on trial for their criminal acts. But organized vigilantism is against the law in every country I know of, and their preplanned attacks are a far cry from tripping a purse snatcher, or stopping a terrorist from blowing up an airplane.

It's only by the grace of God that no one has been killed so far by their stupidity, and their luck is going to run out eventually. I hope to Hell it's a bunch of them that dies, instead of a bunch of Japanese seamen.

And don't kid yourself they don't have a vested financial interest in what they're doing; look at the money rolling in from the people they name their ships after. Last time I checked, Paul Watson didn't have a day job. He's a professional terrorist in every sense of the word, because it's how he makes his living. I don't like terrorists.
