Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked: Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice ? And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.

That was from Washington's farewell address in 1797. Nice to see a genuine quote from one of the founders of the country for a change; the internet is hip deep in bogus ones.

But for a little balance, here's a quote from the book, 'His Excellency: George Washington' by Joseph J. Ellis: "A lukewarm Episcopalian, he never took Communion, tended to talk about "Providence" and "Destiny" rather than God, and - was this a statement? - preferred to stand rather than kneel when praying."

This has always been one of my favorites -- not because I agree with it, but because it showcases perfectly the mentality of the industrial 'robber barons' in the second half of the 1800's, whose excesses and misdeeds led to anti-trust laws and resulted in Standard Oil and other monopolies being broken up.

I used to get my TV shows from Huntington, named for him.
He was the sort that built this country. That is a very good thing.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huntington,_West_Virginia

"The city of Huntington was named for Collis P. Huntington, who built it as the western terminus for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) on the land west of the mouth of the Guyandotte River at the Ohio River."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collis_P._Huntington

"His family farmed and he grew up helping. In his early teens, he did farm chores and odd jobs for neighbors, too, saving his earnings. At age 16, he began traveling as a peddler.............In the lower Peninsula, Collis and other Huntington family members and their Old Dominion Land Company were involved in many aspects of life and business, and schools, museums, libraries and parks are among their many contributions. In Williamsburg, Collis' Old Dominion Land Company owned the historic site of the 18th century capitol buildings, which was turned over to the ladies who were the earliest promoters of what became Preservation Virginia (formerly known as the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities)."

He seems like a decent sort to me.

Yes, he helped build the country. That doesn't necessarily make him 'a decent sort,' any more than rising from rags to riches does. Nor does the fact that he spent some of the money he made on charitable enterprises make him a decent sort, any more than giving money to the Church makes a Mafia don a decent sort.

Among other sharp practices, Huntington bought legislators not just with campaign contributions, but more directly by hiring them as attorneys. In 1873 when Congressional investigators wanted to look at his books, he regretfully informed them that all records had accidentally been destroyed while his company was moving offices.

But I suppose you have no problem with government corruption, as long as it's businessmen doing the corrupting instead of evil unions and liberals....

Corruption is corruption no matter the politics of the one corrupted. It is all about greed and envy for wealth or power and which ideology is the one pulling the strings, isn't it Troy?

No... it isn't all about greed and envy, and which ideology is pulling the strings. And it's kind of sad that you try to reduce it to that. It seems to be the stock defense you pull out any time someone even hints that the rich and powerful are anything less than saints, and it falls woefully short.

The Interstate Commerce Act of 1887, the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, the Clayton Antitrust Act and the Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914, the Robinson-Patman Act of 1936, and the Celler-Kefauver Act of 1950 weren't written because Congress suffered intermittent spasms of greed and envy, but because the uncontrolled actions of large companies can be detrimental to the country's economic well being, and the well being of its citizens.

Stormin' Norman never said that. He would have known better.

Jed Babbin did, in 2003 on the talk show Hardball. Babbin had been a deputy undersecretary of Defense under the first Bush in the 1980's, but held no government position when he said it. So folks started attributing it to people with recognizable names instead.....

I am glad to hear that Troy. It was a question on a tv news quiz show tonight. It is there on a few of those famous quote websites too.
