It isn't often someone totally blind-sides me with a quote. But I have to admit I never heard that one before....:)

I'll have to look it up, and see what prompted Melville to say it.

    Bierce's Dictionary:

Clergyman, noun; One who undertakes management of others spiritual affairs as a method for the betterment of his temporal ones.

Litigation, noun; A machine which you go into as a pig and come out as a sausage.

As far as I'm concerned, Ambrose Bierce ranks right below Mark Twain as a great American writer. It's a shame he isn't read more nowadays.

Thanks for the reminder that 'The Devil's Dictionary' exists. Since it's out of copyright, I'll bet I can go find a copy of it online; I lost my hard copy maybe twenty years ago.

I'm going to try to remember this one.

“This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!"

    - Adolph Hitler, 1935, on The Weapons Act of Nazi Germany

I like guns as much as the next guy, and I'll stand up for our right to own them. But what say we knock off the bogus Hitler quotes? They aren't helpful.

Hitler never said that, and he never passed a law requiring full gun registration. Hell, he didn't have to. One was already in existence years before he took office. And let's not forget that most gun-owning Germans were on his side anyway; he wasn't really worried about a homegrown rebellion.

The gun law Hitler did pass came in 1938, not 1935 -- and it actually loosened gun restrictions for most Germans. For example, it greatly expanded the numbers who were exempt, it lowered the legal age of possession from 20 to 18, and it completely lifted restriction on all guns except handguns, as well as on ammunition.

"The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that the supply of arms to the underdogs is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or native police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order throughout the occupied Russian territories, and a system of military strong-points must be evolved to cover the entire occupied country."

Is this one fake, too, Troy?

"Germans who wish to use firearms should join the SS or the SA - ordinary citizens don't need guns, as their having guns doesn't serve the State."

Therefore it doesn't serve in the state's interest that the ordinary citizen be able to defend one's self.

“I don't see much future for the Americans ... it's a decayed country. And they have their racial problem, and the problem of social inequalities ... my feelings against Americanism are feelings of hatred and deep repugnance ... everything about the behaviour of American society reveals that it's half Judaised, and the other half negrified. How can one expect a State like that to hold together?”

"Still, if you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." Winston Churchill
