the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.

He's one of the USA's funniest writers (after Ambrose Bierce and Tom Lehrer).

Who is one of Australia's funniest, Crocodile Dundee?

That's incredible. Imagine seven million people all wanting to live together. Yeah, New York must be the friendliest place on earth.

OK, time to go look up Mencken. I don't remember reading any of his stuff. But maybe I did way back in the day, given the similarity between what he said and what I said...

Or maybe great minds sometimes just run in the same channel.:p

We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright *****.

Yup. Sounds like a politician of the nanny-state persuasion.

Every politician is a nanny-state politician, when he's trying to get elected. There are simply differences between the groups they want to be a nanny for.

Some try to win by offering to babysit ordinary voters and the poor. Others simply babysit big corporations and the rich, then use the money to lie to the voters...

Don't dismiss the comments -- I think he actually believes them. It's scary. He realizes who the enemy is, but he believes it when the enemy tells him that it's actually the other guy. It's all us and them. Very, very strange.

I'm under no particular illusions when a politician comes around sucking up to me, making promises in return for my vote. But I don't believe that big business and the super wealthy are my best friends either, and I sure as hell don't believe the politicians they've bought and paid for have my best interests at heart.

If you'd rather believe that management is your best friend even as it fights for the right to lower your wages, destroy your benefits and gut your pension, be my guest.

While you're at it, go ahead and believe the government would be doing you a favor by privatizing Medicare and Social Security -- so someone can make a profit off it by charging you more and giving you less, after a lifetime of you paying into the system.

What the hell... as long as you're being hypnotized by the snake that's swallowing you, keep believing that we can only save America by slashing pay and benefits for teachers, nurses, cops, firefighters, bus drivers and janitors -- and using the savings to cut taxes for international corporations and the wealthy.

Hey... why stop there? I'll bet you also believe that the government has to keep subsidizing the oil companies with tax breaks and incentives, to 'protect' us from price increases -- thereby making the mafiosi with their protection rackets look like pikers.

Y'know son, I really don't think you're standing in a good place to be making snide remarks about what I believe....;)
