Can RCD Cat B monos enter Fastnet and Sydney-Hobart?

 

No.

Fastnet is ISAF category 2. Sydney Hobart is ISAF category 1.

Both ISAF category 1 and 2 , among other things, require at least structural ISO 12215 category A and stability ISO 12217 category A.


NB for Fastnet, at least, there are other races that may have less restricted conditions, such as miniFastnet, for minitransat 6.50 which are NOT iso category A. (But do have strong class rule safety requirements, beyond ISO).

A boat needs to be built strong enough, but for a racing boat not too strong. Nothing strange about that.

Stability is a function of shape and CG, and we get STIX and AVS.

What is strange is the Recreation Craft Directive seems to go a step further:

Cat A 3000Kg min disp
Cat B 1500Kg min disp

Which relates to the absolute amount of energy required for capsize. ie. the area under the AVS graph needs to be at least .......


Where as ISO relates disp to length and beam?
