Galileo Gallilei invented the first known thermometer in 1612. It was very crude and inaccurate. Any measurements of the temperature of the Earth prior to that and until the time of Daniel Fahrenheit is sheer guesswork and I will leave it at that.

About the same time the Flemish chemist, physiologist, physician, Jan Baptist van Helmont discovered the existence of carbon dioxide, without these kind of devils we didn't even know what to worry about today . .

I know. We keep one at the house and use it as the basis for all climate arguments.

"Modern" temperature measurements only go back to the 1880's. Temperature estimates prior to that are done with climate proxies. Notice that they don't derive an absolute temperature (as a thermometer does), but rather a temperature anomaly.

And I may or may not leave it at that... :)

Whenever re-posting pictures or graphs or text from the internet here, please always provide a link to the source you got it from, so any person who's interested is able to have a look at it in its original context, which might provide a broader view at the subject, and if wished, the possibility to dig deeper into the source.

And providing a link also gives credits to the one who provided you the info.

    Thanks ! - :)

    P.S.

Below some links from the above link, they all provide additional information and/or discussion about the above graph, which all could be studied, of course . . ;)

    Notes:

    1) - The links below the red headers link to text in English.

    2) - The below set of links does not include the worldwide usage of this graph whenever displayed on a medium that is not Wikipedia related, such as these forums.

    3) - Please don't mind the :D emoticons in the below in-line links, they are incorrectly automatically generated, and for no reason at all displayed on the forum, whenever there's ‘‘:D’’ in the text of the below in-line links the :D emoticon replaces ‘‘:D’’ in the seen text, those links themselves keep on working properly though, thanks goodness for this, otherwise we would have a real problem here . .

Discussions are on-going to provide a statue in honor of Snooty. It is to replace a statue that was erected to honor American(USA vs. CSA) Civil War Confederate war dead.

Why should a statue for Snooty replace another statue, isn't there place for both of them in Bradenton, FL ?

Evidence of "tipping points" turning climate change from gradual to rapid | New Atlas

Ice core samples in Greenland have shown that during the last glacial period, temperatures periodically shot up by as much as 10° C (18° F) in a matter of decades. These become known as Dansgaard-Oeschger events, but it wasn't clear why they occurred. A study, published in Nature Geoscience, has shown that high concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere was the likely suspect for these sudden warming events. The CO2 levels didn't have to rise quickly either: after a period of slow but constant growth, the climate can reach a crucial tipping point, setting off a chain reaction that results in temperature spikes.

The answer would bring in too much politics even for this thread. Suffice it to say if you want to keep your statues make sure your side wins.

The tipping point is after you have dined and are ready to pay for the meal. ;)

Exactly! We've had a sumptuous meal and now are about to pay for it. The tipping point...
