Times of India | Arunachal apples losing taste due to climate change

ITANAGAR: Popular for its sweetness, apples produced in the Himalayan state of Arunachal Pradesh are now gradually losing their taste and even turning sour as a result of climate change. With the weather becoming erratic and a clear variation in temperature, snowfall and rainfall pattern being recorded, apple crops are no more getting the appropriate agro-climatic requirements, horticulturalists and climate change experts say.

For optimum growth and fruiting, apple trees need 100-125 cm of annual rainfall, evenly distributed during the growing season. In the last few years, there has been an unprecedented increase in the intensity of rainfall as well as cloudbursts in the north-eastern state.

"Kashmiri apples are sweet because the rainfall is low. But in Arunachal, sometimes it rains very heavily which dilutes the sugar content of the crop affecting its taste," Dr Nazeer Ahmad, director of Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture (CITH) in Srinagar, told PTI. … Our helplessness is, of course, a political more than an environmental problem. We know what needs to be done environmentally, but we lack the political means to make decisions that would ameliorate our climate problems. It is not just our national political dysfunction (although that is severe); we lack global governmental institutions capable of making decisions on the global problems that beset and threaten us. No political system that requires unanimous consent for action can possibly address them. But that, frankly, is all we have in the world today. And the human race is suffering badly for it.

Meanwhile, back in New York, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York has established a new Task Force on Climate Adaptation. While most previous climate efforts have focused on mitigation (like reducing greenhouse gas emissions), this task force is going to explore adaptation -- adapting to the effects of the global warming that is now inevitable. It will look at the significant engineering, planning and financial challenges in protecting coastlines, homes, wetlands, animals and both urban and rural infrastructure; resettling refugees and internally displaced persons. These are monumental: relocation, financing and compensation, land-use restrictions, and many more. Just with respect to migration, it is expected that there will be tens of millions needing to be resettled, with 70 million resettled in the U.S. alone (since we are one of the few developed countries with space to put such refugees).

Will we have more success adapting to climate change than mitigating it? Not likely with our current national and global politics. In 1785, 13 states recognized the folly of organizing themselves in a confederation that required all to agree on how to allocate the Revolutionary War debt and to impose customs duties. In two years, they devised a constitution for a national union. In two more they had ratified it, and could make decisions by majority rule recognized as legitimate. Now, 225 years later, with global existential problems that can destroy us, we sit in the pot, helpless, conscious but paralyzed.

As climate change makes the regions of the West, Southwest, and Great Plains warmer and drier, water demand will continue to increase, and the combined effect will place an ever greater burden on the country’s fresh water supplies — possibly completely draining important reservoirs in those areas, under some scenarios. That’s according to a new study authored by researchers with Colorado State University, Princeton and the U.S. Forest Service, and flagged yesterday by Summit County Citizens Voice.

This is consistent with other studies on the risk of future water shortages: The Department of the Interior is anticipating that by 2060 the gap between river supply and water demand in the states of the Colorado River Basin will be 3.2 million acre feet due to climate change. Research published in Environmental Science and Technology found that by 2050 one third of U.S. counties could face “high” or “extreme” risk of water shortage. And the International Energy Agency determined that if current policies remain in place, fresh water use by the energy industry alone could more than double — from 66 to 135 billion cubic meters annually by 2035…

Here’s just one example of several permutations the study did, laying out the changes in future water yields in 2020, 2040, 2060 and 2080. The A1B scenarios were relatively middle-of-the-road, assuming medium population growth, high economic growth, and medium temperature increases in the future:

UPI | Poll: Environment is low global priority

Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Environmental issues rank low and the issue of climate change is not a priority for people around the world, an international study indicates.

People were five times more likely to point to the economy over the environment as an issue and when asked about climate change, people said they saw the issue more as a national problem than a personal concern, the study found.

USA Today | NASA: Climate change thins forests in eastern U.S.

Years of drought and high temperatures are thinning forests in the upper Great Lakes and the eastern United States, NASA satellites show.

Nearly 40% of the Mid-Atlantic's forests lost tree canopy cover, ranging from 10% to 15% between 2000 and 2010, according to a NASA study released this week. Other afflicted areas include southern Appalachia, the southeastern coast and to a lesser extent, the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada…

If more trees die, the planet warms more. Trees absorb heat-trapping carbon dioxide emissions and thus can reduce the effects of climate change. In 2010, they absorbed 13% of U.S. emissions, the Environmental Protection Agency says…

Drought and heat have caused thinning of forest canopy in the eastern United States from 2000 to 2010, according to a NASA study released in this month. Green areas show increasing tree canopy whereas brown shades show a thinning. Four forest areas negatively affected are circled in red: Great Lakes, Southern Appalachian, Mid-Atlantic, and southeastern Coastal Plain.

New York Times | Study of Ice Age Bolsters Carbon and Warming Link

A meticulous new analysis of Antarctic ice suggests that the sharp warming that ended the last ice age occurred in lock step with increases of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the latest of many indications that the gas is a powerful influence on the earth’s climate.

Previous research suggested that as the world began to emerge from the depths of the ice age about 20,000 years ago, warming in Antarctica preceded changes in the global carbon dioxide level by something like 800 years. That relatively long gap led some climate-change contrarians to assert that rising carbon dioxide levels were essentially irrelevant to the earth’s temperature — a side effect of planetary warming, perhaps, but not the cause…

With its improved techniques, Dr. Parrenin’s group sought to clarify the dating of previously recovered ice cores from Antarctica. Instead of the 800-year lag between temperature and carbon dioxide increases found in some previous research, their work suggests that the lag as the ice age started to end was less than 200 years, and possibly there was no lag at all…

Indeed, though most climate scientists have never seen the supposed gap as a major conceptual problem, it has been invoked repeatedly by American politicians who want to delay action on global warming.

In 2007, for example, former Vice President Al Gore was testifying to Congress about the science in his documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.” He came under attack by Representative Joe L. Barton, a Texas Republican. “CO2 levels went up after the temperature rose,” Mr. Barton said, citing a scientific paper from 2001. “The temperature appears to drive CO2, not vice versa. On this point, Mr. Vice President, you’re not just off a little. You’re totally wrong.”

The emerging evidence suggests that Mr. Gore was right…

Even at the current concentration of the gas, the evidence suggests that increases in sea level of 25 feet or more may have already become inevitable, albeit over a long period. “We’re just entering a new era in earth’s history,” Dr. Shakun said. “It will be an unrecognizable new planet in the future. I think the only question is, exactly how fast does that transformation happen?” …

The latest paper was led by Frédéric Parrenin of the University of Grenoble, in France, and is scheduled for publication on Friday in the journal Science.

That would be assuming that CO2 causes global warming. But it looks as though rather global warming causes more CO2.

I am not going to join this debate because I have already seen enough with the Copenhagen scandal with the email leaks.

My opinion is that this is a big scam by the Collectivist Eugenicists who want a one world government to dictate the future, including their plans to cull the human population down to less than 500 million.

There are 100,000 billionaires in the world. That is who "They" are. '

I have a really interesting fact. There are 110,000 people in the world who have more than 30 million dollars to their name. 100,000 of those 110,000 have actually more than one billion dollars. So you see there are only 10,000 people who have between 30-1000 million. THEREFORE what we see here in this billionaire club is a total monopoly and ruling class above the rest of the people of the world.

And that is my opinion and I lose interest in thinking about it any more.
