Public Radio International | Citizens, climate scientists track climate change with backyard skating rink conditions

Backyard skating rinks in Canada and across the northern latitudes are being threatened by increasing temperatures caused by global warming, scientists say. In an effort to track these changes, a group of climate scientists have created RinkWatch.org, which allows people to use their backyard skating rinks as a yardstick to track climate changes…

On the website, citizens with backyard rinks become RinkWatchers by pinning the location of their backyard rink on the website's interactive map and uploading information about the rink's current skating conditions. RinkWatchers are asked to answer yes or no to whether weather conditions allowed them to skate on their rink, McLeman says. Good skating conditions generally mean the temperature has stayed below 25 degrees Fahrenheit. "We pool that data from right across North America, and then we can start to observe trends and patterns of what’s going on," he said.

The site has been successful in gathering watchers across Canada, the northern United States and into Russia. RinkWatch scientists hope to involve thousands of people in the scientific process…

The Guardian | 1.5C rise in temperature enough to start permafrost melt, scientists warn

A global temperature rise of 1.5C would be enough to start the melting of permafrost in Siberia, scientists warned on Thursday.

Any widespread thaw in Siberia's permanently frozen ground could have severe consequences for climate change. Permafrost covers about 24% of the land surface of the northern hemisphere, and widespread melting could eventually trigger the release of hundreds of gigatonnes of carbon dioxide and methane, which would have a massive warming effect.

However, any such melting would be likely to take many decades, so the initial release of greenhouse gas would probably be on a much smaller scale…

At present, global average temperatures are about 0.6C-0.7C above pre-industrial levels. This means, according to Vaks, that climate modellers should include the possibility of permafrost beginning to melt in their models…

A tsunami is rising on the horizon and people can either start planning for its impact now or wait until it's too late, a water conservationist warned Thursday. Not a literal tsunami, of course, but water shortages will create a crisis of epic proportions, explained Jim Martin, conservation director for the Berkley Conservation Institute. "It's a problem nobody wants to talk about," Martin said during a "conservation summit" on the eve of the Bassmaster Classic, which has attracted media to Tulsa from across the country this week…

More than half the continental United States is currently under drought conditions, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. And the U.S. Drought Monitor shows the entire state of Oklahoma under "severe," "extreme" or even "exceptional" drought conditions. "We keep talking about it," Martin said, "as if the problem will go away once it starts raining." In the short term, perhaps it will, he said. But long-term, water resources are being stretched thin.

From Atlanta to the Pacific Northwest, metropolitan areas are already straining to keep up with demand. The immediate solution is usually to dig deeper wells. But eventually, he said, "you've dug as deep as you can dig."

When the next Hurricane Sandy hits New York City, Wall Street will be prepared. According to a Monday report in The New York Times, the landlords for some of the city’s ritziest office spaces have shelled out millions of dollars to upgrade electrical systems, install floodgates, and generally make their buildings resilient to what have become annual climate catastrophes.

But there are no million-dollar floodgates in the Rockaways, the coastal neighborhood which still bears visible wounds from a storm which blighted the landscape more than three months ago. Thousands of families across the tri-state area remain homeless as well—more than 1,000 in New Jersey alone. While the Financial District inoculates itself to the next superstorm, many working-class and lower-income residents of the tri-state area are still reeling from the last one…

“People in the evacuation zone were about twice as likely to live in public housing as the rest of the city,” when Sandy struck, said Remes. “That’s not natural; that’s about how we organize society.” If that’s the case, then there can be no equitable climate change mitigation without greater economic equality overall. The super-wealthy will hold the means to shield themselves against climate change, while everyone else will be left to fend for themselves. Any attempt to extend that shield to everyone is a fundamentally redistributive project.

In a world-first study, PhD student Eduardo Dias de Oliveira found that when wheat is exposed to more CO2, it is better able to cope with high temperatures and water restrictions.

As long as the temperature does not rise 2ºC more than average, combining the effects of elevated carbon dioxide and high temperature with water restrictions actually improves biomass and grain yield.

Mr Dias de Oliveira's finding could have significant impact on the future of crop production in the Mediterranean-type climatic wheat-growing regions of Australia, where climate change is expected to have a severe impact on annual yields of 20 million tonnes of wheat over the next 50 years…

… The first flaw in today's solutions, such as renewable and nuclear energy, is that cars do not run on solar panels. More than half the world's oil is used in road vehicles, ships and planes.

The two plausible endgames are both perilous for the Middle East. Either oil remains the world's main transport fuel, in which case dangerous climate change is unavoidable. Or, electric vehicles or some other technologies replace oil. A large part of the Middle East's 800 billion barrels of reserves would remain, unburnt, in the ground.

Even if the various low-carbon technologies make rapid progress, we face the second flaw. Significant climate change is already inevitable - we cannot simply dismantle every coal power plant and car tomorrow…

"Artificial trees" may be the answer. These devices, the size of a shipping container, scrub the air using chemical processes, just as natural trees use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide into leaves and roots. The captured carbon dioxide can then be disposed of safely underground, used to recover more oil from old fields, or - eventually - turned into solid minerals for permanent storage. The machines can run off cheap off-peak power, including renewable energy. And they can be placed anywhere in the world. The UAE could extract carbon dioxide for use in its oilfields, and at the same time eliminate emissions from China or the US…

Ring of Fire | Televangelist Pat Robertson Is Now A Climate Change Expert

The man who believes that hurricanes are God’s punishment for things like ************* thinks he knows more than climate scientists.

Pat Robertson dismissed the correlation between severe winter storms and climate change yesterday, saying, “Only in Princeton would people say nutty things like that.” His remark was directed toward a Princeton study that projected less snow but larger winter storms and blizzards as carbon dioxide rates increase over the next 50 to 60 years. Robertson went on to say of the scientists who conducted the study, “You know, they get to be Ph.D.s and they wonder where they’ve studied and learned all these things...”

Of course, this is certainly not the first time televangelist, media mogul, and uber conservative Christian commentator, Pat Robertson, has made a controversial or demeaning statement. He also claims that God has often spoken to him about impending world events including natural disasters, recessions, presidential elections, and terrorist attacks.

He is perhaps best known for his irrational and disparaging remarks and systems of thought such as his belief that the devastating earthquake in Haiti was the result of Haitians’ pact with the devil, which they made in order to liberate themselves from the French, or his assertion that the devastation caused by hurricane Katrina was linked to legalized abortion…

US News & World Report | Climate Change Could Affect Monarch Butterfly's Migration, Study Says

… "The monarchs need the thermal microenvironment at the overwintering sites for the migration cycle to persist. Without that thermal stimulus, the annual migration cycle would be broken and we will have lost one of the most intriguing biological phenomena in the natural world," explained Steven Reppert of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, in a journal news release. "This increased understanding will help us protect the migration."

In an earlier study, the researchers revealed monarchs use skylight cues and an internal compass to help guide them in their migration south. In this new study, the researchers found these navigation tools also help the butterflies return north.

To determine what triggers the monarchs to change direction, they captured a sample of butterflies as they were about to begin their fall migration south. In the lab the butterflies faced the same changes in temperature and light they would experience naturally in the Mexican mountains. After 24 days in the lab, the butterflies were released and headed north -- not south, the researchers noted. But the butterflies that were captured and kept warm continued to fly south. The study's authors confirmed the change in the monarch's direction was because of the cold temperatures, not day length. They suggested their findings shed light on the biological processes involved in monarchs' migration…

Smithsonian | Climate Change is Reducing Our Ability to Get Work Done

If you feel sluggish and have difficulty getting physical work done on very hot, humid days, it’s not your imagination. Our bodies are equipped with an adaptation to handle high temperatures—perspiration—but sweating becomes ineffective at cooling us down when the air around us is extremely humid.

Add in the fact that climate change is projected to increase the average humidity of Earth as well as its temperature, and you could have a recipe for a rather unexpected consequence of greenhouse gas emissions: a reduced overall ability to get work done. According to a study published yesterday in Nature Climate Change, increased heat and humidity has already reduced our species’ work capacity by 10% in the warmest months, and that figure could rise to 20% by 2050 and 60% by the year 2200, given current projections…

Much of the reduced work capacity, the researchers say, will occur in tropical latitudes. In the map from the study below, shaded areas correspond to places where, over the course of a year, there are more than 30 days during which heat and humidity stresses reduce work capacity. Purple and blue cover areas for which this is only true for mostly heavy labor, while green and yellow indicate regions where even moderate labor is impacted:

Under the pessimistic emissions scenario, in 2100, the area of the globe for which humidity curtails work will expand dramatically, covering much of the U.S., and reducing total human work capacity by 37% overall worldwide during the hottest months. Red covers areas for which capacity for even light labor is reduced due to climate for more than 30 days per year:..
