Eight examples of where the IPCC has missed the mark on its predictions and projections

Projection: In 2001, the IPCC offered a range of fossil fuel and industrial emissions trends, from a best-case scenario of 7.7 billion tons of carbon released each year by 2010 to a worst-case scenario of 9.7 billion tons.
Reality: In 2010, global emissions from fossil fuels alone totaled 9.1 billion tons of carbon…

Projection: The IPCC 2007 assessment projected a worst-case temperature rise of 4.3° to 11.5° Fahrenheit, with a high probability of 7.2°F.
Reality: We are currently on track for a rise of between 6.3° and 13.3°F, with a high probability of an increase of 9.4°F by 2100…

Projection: The IPCC has always confidently projected that the Arctic ice pack was safe at least until 2050 or well beyond 2100.
Reality: Summer ice is thinning faster than every climate projection, and today scientists predict an ice-free Arctic in years, not decades…

Projection: In 1995, IPCC projected "little change in the extent of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets… over the next 50-100 years." In 2007 IPCC embraced a drastic revision: "New data… show that losses from the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica have very likely contributed to sea level rise over 1993 to 2003."
Reality: Today, ice loss in Greenland and Antarctica is trending at least 100 years ahead of projections compared to IPCC's first three reports.

Projection: In the 2001 report, the IPCC projected a sea rise of 2 millimeters per year…
Today: Observed sea-level-rise has averaged 3.3 millimeters per year since 1990…

Projection: Unmentioned as a threat in the 1990, 1995 and 2001 IPCC reports. First recognized in 2007, when IPCC projected acidification of between 0.14 and 0.35 pH units by 2100…
Reality: The world’s oceans absorb about a quarter of the carbon dioxide humans release annually into the atmosphere. Since the start of the Industrial Revolution, the pH of surface ocean waters has fallen by 0.1 pH units. Since the pH scale is logarithmic, this change represents a stunning 30 percent increase in acidity.

Projection: In 2007, IPCC reported with “high confidence” that “methane emissions from tundra… and permafrost have accelerated in the past two decades, and are likely to accelerate further…”
Reality: … The Arctic is warming faster than anywhere else on earth, and researchers are seeing soil temperatures climb rapidly, too…

Projection: IPCC has made no projections regarding tipping-point thresholds.
Reality: The scientific jury is still out as to whether we have reached any climate thresholds – a point of no return for, say, an ice-free Arctic, a Greenland meltdown, the slowing of the North Atlantic Ocean circulation, or permanent changes in large-scale weather patterns like the jet stream, El Niño or monsoons. The trouble with tipping points is they’re hard to spot until you’ve passed one…

While we hear of the effect climate change is having around the world, it is refreshing to hear of innovative ways that EU countries are helping to reduce the damage. In a pan-European contest organised by the European Commission, more than 70 organisations from across Europe have taken part in a campaign called 'A world you like. With a climate you like', which aims to find the best and most original idea for combating climate change. The campaign showcases existing cost-efficient solutions for achieving the EU's objective of an 80-95 % reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

…As a result, the town now produces surplus electricity and sells the energy it doesn't use back to the national grid for EUR 350 000.

Another example is Stockholm's central rail station, which converts the body heat of commuters into heat for a nearby office building, reducing not only emissions but also the building's energy bill by up to 25 %…

Landfills are also being used to produce green energy…

Meanwhile, a German company, WeberHaus, builds energy-independent homes, with ecological insulation and photovoltaic lighting systems…

In Dublin, Ireland a Green Plan has been put in place to improve sustainability at the local fire station, with energy consumption being reduced by 80 %….

The Baltic Sea is also being used to power a museum in Tallinn, Estonia…

The thing that bothers me is that all these things are about 2% of the effort required to actually prevent further climate change, and nothing to reduce it.

They are also done at a ridiculously unsustainable price.

TIME -- President Obama: Person of the Year—and Driller in Chief

As you’ve probably heard by now, we’ve named President Barack Obama as 2012′s TIME Person of the Year. (Sorry, Kim Jong Un—it was a tough choice.)…

The environment was one area where the President was less than historic, despite campaign promises in 2008 to treat climate change as a major priority. It’s not that he was bereft of accomplishment—as my colleague Michael Grunwald argued in his excellent book The New New Deal, the 2009 stimulus bill provided billions and billions of dollars in funding for cutting-edge renewable energy, energy efficiency and clean tech firms that will be paying off the country and the climate for years ahead. And Republican lockstep opposition to virtually any environmental act would have hamstrung any President, whatever their green intentions. But a national carbon cap and trade plan failed at least in part because of lack of White House enthusiasm, which had already expended political health care on capital; the White House backtracked on tougher smog regulations over EPA recommendations; and the Administration has been less than aggressive on regulating greenhouse gas emissions.

So it should hearten greens that Obama volunteered in his interview with TIME editors that climate would be a major part of his second-term agenda—at least in part because of concern for his children:

Well, it’s a cliché, but it’s obviously true that for any parent, as you watch your kids age, you are reminded that everything you do has to have their futures in mind. You fervently hope they’re going to outlive you; that the world will be better for them when you’re not around. You start thinking about their kids.

And so, on an issue like climate change, for example, I think for this country and the world to ask some very tough questions about what are we leaving behind, that weighs on you. And not to mention the fact I think that generation is much more environmentally aware than previous generations.

There is that sense of we’ve got to get this right, and at least give them a fighting chance. In the same way that as a parent you recognize that no matter what you do, your kids are going to have challenges — because that’s the human condition — but you don’t want them dealing with stuff that’s the result of you making bad choices. They’ll have enough bad choices that they make on their own that you don’t want them inheriting the consequences of bad choices that you make. We have to think about that as a society as a whole...

Until going green becomes profitable it will drag its feet.

Indicative of the horrible greedy competitive humans we are.

But thats what got us to where we are --on top of the food chain.

As that opinion is firmly established and is not in dispute we could just take our foot off the gas a bit and pause for a clean up before moving on.

New York Times -- $1,200 a Pound, Truffles Suffer in the Heat

… There are various reasons for what has been a decline over decades in the harvest of black truffles from southern France, Spain and Italy, including shrinking forests and changes in land use. In France alone, the annual black truffle harvest has fallen from about 1,000 tons in the 1930s to about 50 tons now…

But now, a team of scientists writing in the British journal Nature says that part of that decline appears to be linked to climate change. They found that the French and Spanish black truffle harvest correlated closely with summer rains, and that the truffle habitat had suffered over the last few decades from hotter summers and less precipitation. That trend is expected to continue, according to most climate models.

Politico -- Arnold Schwarzenegger’s focus: Terminating climate change

New York Times blogs -- Fewer Americans Say Their Actions Can Slow Climate Change

…The Yale Project on Climate Change Communication and George Mason University’s Center for Climate Change Communication found that the proportion of people who say their own energy-saving actions can make a difference in arresting global warming dropped to 32 percent in the latest survey, conducted in September, from 37 percent six months earlier.

The survey, published this week, also suggests that doubt is growing that even widespread concerted action can make a difference when it comes to climate change.

Sixty percent said energy-saving habits could help curb climate change if they were adopted by most Americans, down from 78 percent in 2008; those who say they believe that warming can be slowed by changes in personal habits across the industrialized world dropped to 70 percent from 85 percent over the same period…

Boston Globe -- Drastic cuts in fish quotas expected

With fishery regulators poised to impose devastating cuts Thursday on the New England fleet, blame for the disappearance of once-abundant cod and flounder populations is shifting from fishermen to a new culprit: the changing ocean.

Warming waters and an evolving ocean ecosystem possibly related to man-made climate change are contributing to the anemic populations, not just decades of overfishing, government officials say…

The only option, Bullard and other regulators say, is to dramatically restrict fishing to give the bottom-hugging fish any hope of a comeback.

The New England Fishery Management Council could vote Thursday on cutting catch quotas by up to nearly 80 percent for some stocks of cod, as well as cuts to other species. To ease the pain, the council, a governmental body made up fishermen, industry representatives, state officials, and environmentalists, will also decide whether to open more than 5,000 square miles of conservation area now closed to most fishermen.

Large numbers of fishermen are expected at the meeting in Wakefield, hoping to persuade the council not to take such drastic measures. Environmentalists are also planning to show up, to urge conservation…

Daily Galaxy -- Strong Link Between Climate Change and Volcanic Eruptions Discovered

It has long been known that volcanic activity can cause short-term variations in climate. Now, researchers at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (Germany), together with colleagues from Harvard University have found evidence that the reverse process also occurs: Climate affects volcanic activity. "In times of global warming, the glaciers are melting on the continents relatively quickly. At the same time the sea level rises. The weight on the continents decreases, while the weight on the oceanic tectonic plates increases. The stress changes within in the earth to open more routes for ascending magma" says geophysicist Dr Marion Jegen from GEOMAR, who participated in the study. The rate of global cooling at the end of the warm phases is much slower, so there are less dramatic stress changes during these times…

For more than ten years the project has been extensively exploring volcanoes of Central America. "Among others pieces of evidence, we have observations of ash layers in the seabed and have reconstructed the history of volcanic eruptions for the past 460,000 years," says Kutterolf. Particular patterns started to appear. "There were periods when we found significantly more large eruptions than in others" says Kutterolf.

After comparing these patterns with the climate history, there was an amazing match. The periods of high volcanic activity followed fast, global temperature increases and associated rapid ice melting. To expand the scope of the discoveries, Dr Kutterolf and his colleagues studied other cores from the entire Pacific region. These cores had been collected as part of the International Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) and its predecessor programmes. They record more than a million years of the Earth's history…
