USDA under fire for backing 'meatless Mondays,' linking ranching to climate change

The Agriculture Department is under fire from ranchers and Capitol Hill after encouraging employees to go vegetarian one day a week and warning that meat production contributes to climate change.

The department has since backed away from the statements, but not before causing a bovine brouhaha, particularly at a time when the drought is threatening America's ranchers...

"How will going meatless one day of the week help the environment? The production of meat, especially beef (and dairy as well), has a large environmental impact. According to the U.N., animal agriculture is a major source of greenhouse gases and climate change. It also wastes resources."

Borneo's forests face dire future from global warming

Already wracked by extensive deforestation and forest degradation, the future looks grim for Borneo's tropical rainforests, reports a new study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Biogeosciences.

Combining historical records with field observations and global climate models Tomo'omi Kumagai and Amilcare Porporato of Duke University find that an sharp increase in drought conditions — a product of warmer temperatures in the Indian Ocean and higher frequency of el Niño events — will make it more difficult for Borneo's rainforest tree species to survive...

The results aren't surprising. Similar findings have been reported in parts of the Amazon where trees are poorly adapted to drought and fire. Climate models also forecast an increase in drought and fire across large extents of the Amazon rainforest...

"Teachers aren't comfortable addressing the subject because they don't understand it at all," he said. "It is an inherently complicated set of issues that transcend a single field of science." In addition, he notes, "It's viewed in our society today as controversial and sensitive, so if I raise this issue, I'm going to upset someone and have a problem."

On the positive side for food output, a slight rise in temperatures is likely to help plant growth overall...But long-term net benefits are doubtful, especially because U.N. studies say rising greenhouse gas emissions are on track to push temperatures up by more than 2 Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial times, set by 200 nations as a threshold for dangerous change. Temperatures have already risen by almost 1 degree (1.6F)...

They urged more research into drought- or flood-resistant crops...

But he said the world now had triple goals of producing food for people, crops for biofuels and feed for animals, often raised for their meat. "In my view we can have two out of those three and not all three," he said.

A shift towards more vegetarian diets would help, he said.

Why don't we clarify that statement a little?

Law enforcement officers use hollow points on criminals who are usually shooting back, not on generic 'American citizens.'

They do so because hollow point bullets are much less likely to harm innocent civilians, by over-penetrating or ricocheting. Hollow points also take down the bad guys faster, which (again) means there's less chance of innocent bystanders getting hurt.

Would you rather have them firing full metal jacket military rounds, that can go through three walls of your house and still kill your wife or child?

Don't let the urgent displace the important...

...The countries potentially facing the worst fates may not necessarily experience the greatest climate change, but instead lack the resources to cushion their people against climate-related disasters such as hurricanes, floods, heat waves and droughts. That has historically made a huge difference in rates of death or displacement from such events — Hurricane Jeanne killed just three people in the U.S. in 2004, but resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people in Haiti and displaced about 200,000 Haitians...

So what countries face the greatest danger from climate change? Maplecroft, a British consultancy, has created a "Climate Change and Environment Risk Atlas," a list of 193 countries ranked by those most vulnerable to climate change because of factors such as population density or state of development.

The 2012 edition of the risk atlas identified 30 countries as being at extreme risk. The top 10 most at risk include: Haiti, Bangladesh, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Cambodia, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi and the Philippines...

Wehner suggested that climate change during his lifetime would be "manageable" as far as living in the U.S., but added that his grandchildren would face tougher choices.

Roberts, who lives in Rhode Island on top of a hill near Narragansett Bay, took an even more cautious approach about buying beachfront property even in the U.S. "While I would love to look out over the water, I would think twice before buying land or property, and especially before putting my family right at sea level, in a place that may suffer storm surge," Roberts said.

Perhaps the single biggest barrier to action on climate change is the fact that it doesn’t hit us in the gut. We can identify it as a great moral wrong, through a chain of evidence and reasoning, but we do not instinctively feel it as one. It does not trigger our primal moral intuitions or generate spontaneous outrage, anger, and passion. It’s got no emotional heat. (Ironic!)...

Why climate doesn't activate our moral judgment

1. Abstractness and cognitive complexity: Climate change is tough to understand...

2. The blamelessness of unintentional action: Nobody is heating the atmosphere on purpose...

3. Guilty bias: We’re all somewhat to blame for climate change...

4. Uncertainty breeds wishful thinking: It’s not clear exactly how climate change will play out...

5. Moral tribalism: Messaging about climate has tended to focus on liberal values (harms and unfairness) and disregard conservative values (loyalty, respect for authority, and purity/sanctity)...

6. Long time horizons and far away places...

How to communicate climate morally

1. Use existing moral values...

No, they don't. I've never heard of a single case of an LEO shooting someone simply because they couldn't speak English. Frankly, you're engaging in completely unnecessary rabble-rousing.

Why are you projecting such hate and contempt on the people who put their lives on the line to keep you and your loved ones safe?

Obviously they aren't perfect; they're susceptible to all the same frailties as the rest of mankind. But when the **** hits the fan, they get paid to run towards the trouble instead of away from it. And occasionally they die doing so....
