new to the forum. I have a 1979 80hp mercy and it has now no spark. I went out three days ago and ran fine. Now had no spark. Will turn over just won’t fire. The ground on the rectifier came apart, but shouldn’t effect the spark right? But that ground did touch another open wire and started to smoke a little. Please help me, I was told either the stator or the switch box. Any insight would help

Probably the stator. Look for crispy spots where you let the smoke out of it.

You need a multimeter and a workshop manual to test components.
